Yeah, it was the mon of the school, not a crab clan.
Edit- Who would want to be a poseur crab? That's like trying to smell like a skunk to impress people.
Oh yeah I went there
:P
What an ironic statement considering essence of skunk is the primary ingredient for most perfumes. Guess they didn't teach you that in your fancy imperial court schools.

Why would he care how people made perfumes?
Masashi wears the scent of a real warrior.... his own musk.
He's a member of the extended Imperial Family (I think) that serves as the bureaucracy of the Empire. But since that didn't suit his character, he's slumming it with the rough and tumble Crab family. Using his position he entered the Hiruma school which is responsible for going into the Shadowlands and reporting on any activity there.

So my character belongs to one of the Imperial families (ie a relative of the emperor)- specifically the family that produces some of the best courtiers. But he apparently up and left to train with the Crabs... which is pretty darned bizarre.

So calling you a Crab was... not exactly correct.
Is this at least a reasonable mistake to make, or is it something that a blind, deaf, dead samurai should have noticed?
I don't think it's exactly polite to call people by their clan name anyways. At least not after being introduced. Some might take it as an insult that you don't recognize their family.

Man, if I had known there was L5R'ing going on in here I would have been lurking this forum a long time ago.
I've been trying like crazy with little luck to get a group together locally, but only a small portion of my standard roleplaying group is remotely interested.

There's a sort of spectrum of name-calling in Rokugan.
From my recollection (CJ please correct me if I'm wrong):
Formal and/or don't know the person's name:
<clan>-san or <clan>-sama- is formal and/or used when you don't know the samurai's name. -sama is generally expected if the person outranks you, and can be used when you are showing deep respect to someone of your own rank
<clan><name> -san or -sama is very formal
<name>-san/sama indicates you know the person passingly well, and is less formal.
<name> idecates you know them fairly well, and is informal
<name>-kun indicates the person is a very good friend, and is VERY informal
especially about -kun, which you pretty much only use if you can tickle the person while going coochie coochie coo or in this case a fantastic way to taunt a duder kind of
unskilled rolls can't explode aka no 10 again basically

The mechanics behind unskilled? Your dice don't explode on 10s if you don't have the skill (though you can spend a void point to give yourself a point in the skill for the one roll).
I'll say it here as well in case tangen wants to add it in a post. There is red cloth under the fingernails of the peasant. Linking the red shawl for certain with the killing. Nothing else. Waste of a huge roll? Never!

also, ahahah awesome.
Indeed I did.
He's a poser. Just a student of the Hiruma school.

Well, if it smells like a Crab and talks like a Crab...

I think it'll be amusing for my character to go through this assuming that everyone is becoming possessed though.
Oh, wait. We have a Kitsuki investigator with us. Never mind, carry on :P
For what it's worth, Masashi probably wasn't looking too hard anyhow.
I forget the exact mechanics behind it, should probably review the book again.

I think I just got an enlightenment victory.
Good call. Thats what I get for doing it without my book infront of me
