Let's talk 3D ready TVs

So after a 4th repair my 56" 1080p DLP finally gave up the ghost. I told Samsung they weren't going to repair it for a 5th time, and to just take back the POS and replace it. Since the TV was a year and a half old they had to replace it with a current model of equal value and specs. I ended up getting a 2008 61" 3D ready 1080p DLP. Joy..
Anyway I don't know much about the 3D ready features, I've seen a couple of articles and news stories on it, it seems pretty cool, and I've heard a couple of pleasant accounts from people that have checked it out at tech shows. But I just haven't had a chance to see it for myself. Has anybody here had the privilege of putting this tech through its paces? Is it worth investing in the shutter glasses kit? If so which kit should I buy? If it's worth a purchase I don't mind plunking down 100 bucks, but I won't do it sight unseen or at least without some glowing reviews from the folks here.
Also what kind of content is available for it? I heard that the current iteration converts everything dynamically you just turn on the 3D effect and channel surf or pop in a movie, and I've seen some stories that say only certain content or content that you have converted works, but I'm not sure if that is just older stories.
Neat little article, but it pisses me off to no end when people say 4D.

3D seems kinda cool. I dunno if I want to drop all kinds of cash on something that isn't proven yet, though. Maybe in a few years when the next generation of consoles drop and everyone is on board for this thing, then I'll look into getting a 3DTV. I adopted HD when I got a 720p, and now everything is 1080p, and I don't want to get on the early train to "Not-as-good-ville" again.

Its an interesting idea. 3D technology has been around for a while now hence with the ol multishaded glasses and in certain amusement parks. But i assumed the technology was there so you didn't have to wear glasses. In the standard home and for convienience i don't think people will want to wear an accessory when they can get as much enjoyment out of the standard picture. Like HD i think this will be one of those technologies that makes it's way on to the market but in a much more standadised way (rather than making everything exclusive like Blu-Ray, alienating the market).
Personally conventional television has reached it peak in terms of entertainment. Adding novelty like HD and 3D won't really break into the market in the way colour and cable do.
The real future of home entertainment will be interactive media like Gaming.

Well I didn't get this TV for it, it was just a free bonus, so I'm wondering if it's worth just dropping a single bill on the shutter glasses for it. Mind you these are powered glasses not the crappy Red/Blue glasses you remember from the 50s.

At the very least, I'd hit up one of those electronic stores that let you try shit out. The salesmen usually work for commission, and will let you do anything short of fucking their wives for a sale.

This is the kind of interactive media i will possibly be doing when im about 75, and not able to any of the more "suggestive" types hehe.
Seriously, we're along way away from the type of holographic displays seen in Star Trek.
Hell we can't even make a proper light saber yet :P
