So I have a problem. Any time I've tried to play video files I've got on my computer, they either refuse to play, or the video track doesn't show up at all. I've got a massive codec pack installed, along with a number of different media players. VLC was working just fine up until a few weeks ago, then it just stopped for no apparent reason. Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

sounds like a codec issue. I run media player classic and use the CCCP and have never had a playback problem.

Hmmm, nope. MPC and CCCP don't seem to fix it, either. Crap crap crap.

Uninstall all the video codecs and just run your VLC. VLC doesn't need codecs to work and video codecs can do weird things to machines.

Also, I know this might sound like retarded advice you'd get from some tech support guy, but it is always good to start with the basics right?

Have you restarted your PC recently?

A lot of codec packs and plugins are incompatible with each other. They try to grab functionality from each other and screw things up. I'd uninstall every media player, plugin, and codec and start from scratch.

If you want a player that will play anything without having to worry about codecs, you can use MPlayer. Here's a link:

I have no idea what to do with MPlayer; I don't have Linux, so I don't know how I'd go about installing it.

VLC still isn't doing anything. I hear sound, but no picture, just blank screen. I've even uninstalled all my video codecs and everything. I don't know what else I can do at this point.

I'm at my wit's end, to be honest.

EDIT: Got MPlayer working. Still no dice on the video, though. This is frustrating beyond all reasonable belief.

Where is this video from? Is it possible its encoded poorly or wrong? Also, get the klite codec pack. That has always worked when I have weird video problems.

What is the extension of the video you are trying to play?
I'm sure you have divx right?
