i'm not sure using overlay is the best way to go about painting shadows. I mean, yeah whose to say it won't work, but i feel ur better off just knowing color and lighting and just paint the different tones on the same layer, or a new default one. anyways aside from a few technical things it seems good enough for someone just learning the mechanics of ps for the first time.

I'm more into learning how to speed paint in a similair style to James Paick, I find his sense of scope awe-inspiring. I'm 20 now, my goal is to be as good as him by the age of 26.
It's really cool to see other peoples techniques. I was tought by some dude at uni (professional concept artist) that the bst way to do a digital painting is to do it entirely B&W, establishing the values. Once this is done, block in colours, and paint entirely over the original picture. He was tought that technique by the dude that did the God of War illustration art (i think).
Cool. Maybe some other badass digital artists can also post up a simple tutorial sharing your technique with us.

I would like to point out that not one, but two of the people who wrote those tutorials were or are teachers of mine.
