Loud Whirring Noise From Engine

So, I walked outside to my car at 10:30 last night, and it was probably like -15F with windchill. I start it up, and there's this horrendous whirring sound. I get scared and turn it back off. I try again. Same thing. I call my parents, and they say to just let it sit for five or ten minutes before driving, that the engine just needs to warm up because it's so cold.

Is that correct or is there something wrong with it? I made it home fine, and the engine quieted down, but it was still making a quiet version of the noise all the way home.

Anecdotal evidence: Yes, it could be.

I had my serpentine belt carve through part of the engine when it was making a loud whirring noise. Pop the hood, look for anything that looks "Oh shit what the fuck?" and call it a day if nothing looks out of the ordinary. It's been really bad nasty this year so it may be something new to you.

Cold engine, probably the belt. My car does this same thing. Your parents are right - once the engine warms up the sound goes away.

If the sound doesn't go away - call the mechanic.

Yea, it might start getting worse, IE sticking around longer after warming up.
Just time to change the belts. Not to expensive.
You'll notice when it starts getting worse, but you have some time.

Yeah it's way worse than anything I've driven in before, temperature-wise. Because last year was my first driving and I kind of crashed. Into a wall. On the interstate. So I wasn't driving for most of that winter.

Yeah I'd chalk it up to cold weather. It sounds like you can start your car, mine wouldn't even turn over when it was a belt issue. But that's a belt noise you're hearing (most likely, IANAM)
