so my friend is having a problem with his laptop that I just cant help him figure it out. This is posted verbatim from another forum in hopes of getting some responses
My dad gave me his computer which died then he put in a new hard drive and I'm having some problems with the DVD drive that I cant figure out.
I was able to install a game from the cd but when I tried to play it, the computer was unable to start directx. So I reinstalled directx and had the same problem.
As well, I tried watching a dvd movie and when I put the dvd in it opened windows media player under "Unknown DVD" and wouldn't play.
I was thinking it was a driver problem but i now i have no clue!
Here's some specs that might be useful
TEAC DV-W24EW (this is the DVD drive)
HP DV - 1000
First, I thought your dad died, that would have been pretty bad.
Are there any important files on there? Have you tried restoring it to factory state? That's really the only advice I can give. I've never seen that particular constellation of symptoms before.
Will DVDs play in VLC? What exactly do the errors say?
Well, It could be a problem with your DVD drive (Not so sure about the directx thing)
Mine is a HP DV6450us (generically HP Pavilion dv6000 on the front)
My DVD burner would always fail to read DVD movies and burn any sort of media correctly (read cds alright)
The model of the dvd drive was TSSTcorp TS-L632M. I was still in the warranty and got a replacement from HP.
May not have solved anything but I thought I would throw it out there.
