PS3/Dell monitor issue (LUPUS?!)

It seems like I have the tendency to run into weird tech issues. Hopefully you PAers are more well versed than me when it comes to this:

I bought a Dell S2409W monitor a week ago. Have my PS3 hooked up on it via HDMI at 1080p resolution. Everything worked fine and dandy until I was switching around from DVI to HDMI display modes. When I switched back to the PS3's HDMI mode, the screen went black.

So I went through a series of testing, trying to figure out where the problem originate from:
(this is tested by resetting ps3 back to its factory setting)

pc video card-->hdmi okay
pc video card--> dvi okay
xbox 360 ---> vga okay
ps3 hdmi--> negative
ps3 hdmi/dvi adaptor negative

Then I proceeded to hook up PS3 on my old 22" widescreen monitor via DVI/HDMI adaptor connection. The 22" works fine with the PS3. I also attempted to hook up the PS3 onto an old TV using component cable. The PS3 works fine on the TV.

So... what exactly is causing the problem? Is it PS3 or is it the new monitor. I cannot really pinpoint the cause of the problem here and hopefully you guys can help me out here. Any suggestion will be appreciated, thanks in advance everyone.

    This isn't that weird, sometimes monitors hang. An older monitor from Gateway does this to me every so often. While the monitor is connected to the PS3 and powered on unplug it and let it sit for at least a minute. Then plug it back in and power it up.
