Fuck Sheriff Joe - Slouching Towards Facism Edition
A group of Maricopa residents worried that the good Sheriff's obsession with illegal immigration is, well, leaving the community in danger have been attending the county Board of Supervisors meetings in order to voice their concerns. In response, deputies now blanket the meeting room, comment time has been reduced, and, well, at a recent meeting, when people applauded someone speaking up against Sheriff Joe, the deputies arrested them.
At this point, I have no faith that there will be anything done to him on the state level. What needs to be done is that a solid, hardnosed prosecutor needs to be apponted to the US Attorney seat in Maricopa, and tasked to build a federal case against him. Because that this point, that seems to be what it's going to take to make him face justice.
Or, you know, elections. I assume the office of Sheriff is either elected directly or appointed by an elected official. The point where you start fucking with your electorate is the point where you don't remain elected.

He's elected. He got 55% in November.
Weren't there a bunch of lawsuits against this guy? What happened with those? Maybe when the county starts getting hit with million dollar verdicts they'll wake up and toss this guy out.

One of the reasons he focuses on illegal immigrants is because it's good red meat that keeps him in office. As was pointed out, he won reelection with 55% of the vote, mainly because he does bullshit grandstanding.

Yeah - Maricopa County has had to pay out $44 million in rulings against Sheriff Joe.
He's never going to be voted out. Arizona is a red state, and we love our good old Boss Hog. Actually though, Boss Hog was a saint compared to this fuckwad.
Trust me, Sheriff Joe is EVIL. He breaks the law all the time, he profiles, his deputies have fucking MURDERED people, and nothing ever gets done. When I find it, I'll post the story about the time his deputies burned a couples dog alive in front of them. no joke.
The only thing that can bring this guy down now is Obama's new AG. Seriously, something needs to be fucking done.

He keeps on getting elected because his publicity stunts and style of policing is the kind that appeals to idiots. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Arpaio
I could put most of this shit into a book called "I am not making this up."
Yeah... Arizonia's love the asshole because he brutalizes criminals. He's like a cartoon badguy... only he's real, and the city of Phoenix is his playground. You could make a freaking GTA game based on his exploits.

Problem: There is overcrowding. We can arrest less people, sentence them to shorter lengths of time, or spend 70 million on a new jail.
Joe's solution: Let's build a fucking tent city in fucking Arizona! That will work really well as a long term solution to the problem of overcrowding!!!

It'll be like camp, a camp where you can concentrate about what you've done wrong!
That's pretty accurate. The beauty of tent city is that it's the freaking jail. Almost anyone who lives in AZ knows someone who did a day or two in there for whatever reason.

You guys know my reputation involving religion threads?
There's no possible way to compare that to the rage I feel when talking about this man.
Yeah, I lump Sheriff Joe into the same category as Fred Phelps.
THEY ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE IN THIS CATEGORY.

He had the editors of the New Times arrested for the stories they published about him.

The paper reported earlier in the day the county wants to use grand jury subpoenas to pry into the habits of visitors to the Web site of the New Times newspaper.
Tent city is actually quite pleasant for a jail so long as you don't eat the food, but that's why Joe provides vending machines, which of course his brother reaps all the profits from.
I mean its better than the 10x10 standing room only cell he puts you in before making it to the tent where you better not have to pee.
Edit: by which I mean, apparently this is what people there want from their sheriff. Wouldn't it be a greater victory of democracy for someone to beat this guy in an election than to have him thrown in jail?

Thanks, youtube's blocked for me.
Why do I get the feeling Arpaio's one of those who rail against "illegals are stealing your tax dollars!" while at the same time he's directly responsible for $44M being drained from the county's general fund?
Edit: by which I mean, apparently this is what people there want from their sheriff. Wouldn't it be a greater victory of democracy for someone to beat this guy in an election than to have him thrown in jail?
For Democracy, yes. But if he's actually breaking the law, then he deserves jail time.
This guy scares the shit out of me - from what I've seen, you're basically signing your rights away when you cross over into his jurisdiction.
Want a speedy trial? Tough shit. Want decent food and water? Tough shit. Want a catheter that you need to urinate because you're in a wheelchair and if you don't get one your kidneys will literally explode? Tough shit.
The scariest thing, though, is that he is continually elected. People love it. It's terrifying.

I rarely ever think killing someone is the answer to a problem but I'm severely tempted to root for some drunk driver to plow into his car.

Maybe he could commit a misdemeanor, get thrown into one of his own jails, and be thrown into a straight jacket, shot with tasers and pepper balls, and then be beaten and suffocated to death by the guards, ala Juan Farias.
In 2004, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office SWAT team led a raid on an Ahwatukee home in a gated subdivision, looking for illegal weapons. No illegal weapons were found, but during the raid, the house burned down, killing a dog, and an armored vehicle rolled into a neighbor's parked car.
I thought raids just involved busting down a door and arresting dudes. How do you burn down a house and roll over a car?

They probably got it with Homeland Security Bucks. You know, because terrists etc. Didn't the home belong to some guy that was publicly against the sheriff? Also supposedly the dog was running away terrified when they killed it.

AKA the Southern argument against civil rights legislation.
Stuff like this is why I'm leery of federalism and adamantly opposed to local control over things like law enforcement, the courts and schools. There's a reason why First World societies with a strong national government avoid a lot of our country's problems.
Our country is set up so that the majority of the best and brightest get their educations and jobs in major metropolitan areas. That leaves the rural and secondary cities in the hands of folks of a widely variable degree of competence and moral fiber. Those folks get to decide how to educate and police their fellow citizens and often end up creating cycles of repression and stupidity. A national - or at least state-based - system would eliminate or at ameliorate a lot of these problems.

Don't you guys have something at least similar to the European Court of Human Rights? Or would the Supreme Court fill this role?

What can I say. Arizona loves our crazy sheriff. I do like that he's tough on crime and most of tent city is filled with people arrested for DUI. I've known a few people who went there and came out going right for rehab/AA/etc. Its the incidents where laws are broken or disregard by his deputies that bother me. Ex...the Prostitues or the dog incident.
Maybe I should run for Sheriff and my stance will be no more jails. I'll just go out into the middle of the desert, build a 200 foot tall wall with only way in our out being air lifts. Meals will consist of a live cow being air lifted in and what happens happens. Oh...and Tents for everybody!
*Waits for 2012 so his reign of terror can legally begin*

There's the federal court system, but the path to it is somewhat convoluted and different federal districts have widely varying tolerances for hearing civil rights cases. The Supreme Court, as you mentioned, does handle some of these cases, but the Supremes only deal with a small handful of cases - around 100 - and tends to focus more on big picture rulings with wide scopes rather than individual violations of human rights.
There's also the fact that most civil rights violations must be handled as civil cases. The U.S. doesn't provide representation for civil complaints and, unless an attorney is willing to volunteer their time or feels there's a decent chance of getting paid through a settlement, a poor or even middle class defendant couldn't afford to bring a complaint.

Man, it's so horrible that I am both serious and blase about the possiblity of local law enforcement purposefully setting some dude's house on fire
I still contend Reno threatened to charge in there butt naked causing the Davidians to burn themselves instead.
