Getting protected songs onto an iPod?

So I just bought a CD (We Are Scientists-With Love And Squalor), and I find that I can't export the songs into iTunes, and therefore can't put them on my iPod. Now, this effectively makes the CD useless, as I never listen to CDs anymore. Going into the online help for the CD, I find this:
Content Protection technology does not work with iPods that use iTunes for Windows, as Apple is still not licensing their proprietary rights management system that is used on iPod. The music industry as a whole is working to convince Apple to license their system, at which point you will be able to export protected tracks to your iPod.

Now, to me, this is totally unacceptable. I paid for this damn music in a store, and there wasn't exactly a "DOES NOT WORK WITH IPOD" sticker to warn me. So, my question is: is there some way I can modify the files to get them into my iTunes?

Again, I'd like to stress that I paid for this music and it is legally mine. But if mods feel this topic is less than legal, feel free to lock it.

Well, the autoplay didn't go, but I'm not sure what to do from here. It's still not appearing in iTunes. More info?

off original topic, but i must note

i saw WAS in lansing, mi earlier this year and they were FANTASTIC especially in such an intimate venue.. so close to stage and there werent many people there. wonderful show indeed,
funny thing was i saw them play a few songs the day before in detroit at the 89x birthday bash (to which i went to see mindless self indulgence more than anything else, but there was a fair number of cool acts playing.. those crazy radio stations)

    <3 WAS

That's what makes this a terrible problem. The CD is really, really good.

Ummm, would it be wrong to... acquire it since you did buy it? :?

I know that there is "content protection," but isn't it still possible to rip the CD using WMP and then just drag/drop that folder onto your ipod (assuming you're not using an older ipod/itunes where you have to import it into your library first and then drag/drop it onto your ipod)?

The answer from the official boards.

Anyhow, we're not going to discuss how you might do it, but you do have a right to listen to that CD now, so if someone were to give you a copy of the songs to listen to on your computer, well, the artist, label and retail chain have all already been paid, so no one's really losing anything as long as you don't go and share your personal digital copies with anyone else.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't something that could rip it.

Have you tried CDex or (an old version of) dBPowerAmp?

EDIT: Also, I've successfully obtained refunds for CDs that are copy-protected. The key point to emphasise is that the CD doesn't work, and it's not your equipment that's at fault.

Read the URL I linked to. The reason it doesn't work is because when the CD is put into the computer, it auto-runs an invisible program that prevents your computer from recognizing it as an audio-CD, and only allows the PC to see the data track, which has DRMed versions of the songs in WMA format, something that can't be played on an iPod. It forces you to either defeat the copy protection using the instructions I provided, or make wave file copies of the songs by playing them through Windows Media Player while recording the output from your soundcard and then rip them to MP3. The problem with that is that you see substantial quality loss because you've transcoded.

Oops, My bad. In any case, I thought those autorun things usually installed something, in which case he wouldn't be able to rip the CD subsequently without first removing whatever was installed. I can't find any info on what specific technology is being used.

If all else fails, he could boot a Knoppix disc (which would be unaffected by any windows-targeted DRM) and use whatever that comes with to rip to a USB stick.

Thanks for the help, everyone. The songs are now resting comfortably on my iPod. You can mark this solved, now.
