XBLA Recommendations: Difficult, Reflex/Puzzle games?

So I have 1200 points and I'm looking to get a game that's somewhat difficult but is rewarding all the same.

Basically this comes down to reflex intensive shooters or platformers, or either puzzle games.

I'm thinking about Ikaruga, but what else is out there? Maybe Pacman: CE?

No, no, you had it right the first time. Ikaruga is absolutely fantastic.

    N+ and Geometry Wars. Done.

Then after you get more points, track down Poker Smash, Braid, Eets, and Wik.

    N+ is glorious.

Ikaruga is fantastic too, but is not anywhere near as reflex intensive as N+ is.

Actually, I recommend Geometry Wars 2 over the first. While the first is fun and challenging, the second offers a lot more and varied modes each with their own brand of challenge.

Oh yeah, and Mega Man 9.

You were so close to being completely right, I just had to fix it for you.

But where is he gonna get the extra points? :p The two games play differently enough for me to recommend both. Surprisingly, a lot of people play Geo2 almost exclusively for Pacifism. I actually prefer the original over the version of Evolved in Geo2.

Since getting Geo2 I have never once had the desire to return to the original.

I did not, however, notice the 1200-point limit the OP mentioned, so in that respect I do bow in deference.

Do you have Lumines for anything else? If not that's a great purchase.

If you haven't played Rez it's truely one of those games you MUST experience, especially if you have a nice sound system.

N+ is definately awesome for smooth reflex platforming.

I love how you can demo games on XBLA. I haven't used my Wii for a while - can you demo games on VC?

N+ purchased. I fell in love with it just playing the tutorial levels.

I only have 490 points left now, so I doubt I'll be able to buy any of the others.

Nope. If you have the Wii Ware Dr. Mario you can send a demo to your friends, Smash Bros. Brawl has demos of a bunch of VC games, and you can download DS game demos wirelessly onto your DS with the Nintendo Channel, but Nintendo has (stupidly) yet to allow normal downloadable demos.

Hmm, that's a shame. What about WiiWare?

Geometry Wars is 400 points. Buy it now if you haven't already. I didn't stop playing until I got the full 200 points, which was well after the release of Geo Wars 2, even though I bought it almost 2 years ago. The game is hard.

I'm afraid you're all incorrect, the correct answer is Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo.

Puzzle Fighter is great, but it's not all that difficult, plus it's more of a party game.

Agreed. Pac-Man: CE is still the best XBLA game out there. He bought N+ though so I can't get mad at him. How's the Premium theme BTW?

Also to anyone who likes XBLA games and has a few extra points left over, I highly recommend checking out the Community Games. True, most of what's there is garbage, but there's a few real gems for dirt cheap: Hexothermic (fantastic Nintendo Bit Generations-esque puzzler for 200 points), Weapon of Choice (think Contra with over the top weapons for 400 points), and CarneyVale Showtime (hurl a ragdoll acrobat through obstacle courses for 400 points) just to name a few of the better ones.

I bet it's difficult if you play online. I thought I was pretty decent but I was humbled at PAX.

Gripshift is an awesome purchase if you're looking for something different. It's a puzzle/platformer/racing game with an online battle mode that Mario Kart wishes it could have. It also has probably the best netcode of any Live Arcade game.

You'll be hard-pressed to find someone actually playing online at any time. The community is pretty much dead now.
