I've been watching a lot of Jimmy Stewart movies lately.
Most of them have a "Restored by Library of Congress" and should be copyright free, yes?

I've found some on video.google.com, but it's sparse. Anyone know were there is an digital archive online were I can download free&legal older movies?

Archive.org has some of what you're looking for.

If you want to spring for a Netflix account, their online archive is huge and growing, and has thousands of older films (as well as many new ones). Their streams are high-quality and pretty fast.

Netflix also has a lot of things that aren't "old" by any means, like the most recent Tony-award-winning musical revival of Company, which was from a PBS Great Performances. It is SO worth springing for a Netflix account if you like watching online streams.

Erm, in terms of free stuff, I've watched a couple of these:
