I'm having a problem getting my old Vaio (11 years old and counting!) to boot to Windows. I get an error message that says: "Hardware Monitor encountered a problem, see Power Setup Menu". I hit F2 to go to the power menu, and it displays my CPU temperature and fan speed. Everything looks normal; but I can't get Windows to boot even in safe mode.
I've cleaned out all dust in the stack, and disconnected/reconnected the fan. Is the motherboard shot? Do I need a new fan? Am I grasping at straws trying to save a decade old computer?
I've tried resetting everything to the defaults, if that's what you mean. I've read elsewhere that a power pin under my floppy may have come loose inside the stack, so I'll try searching for that that when I get home. I'm no tech-whiz, so it's mostly trial and error when I pull the machine apart. I think I'm slowly reaching the point of diminishing returns trying to fix it myself. "Diminishing" meaning a zero-state on returns, actually.
