Who gets Motion Sickness from video games?

EliteLamerEliteLamer __BANNED USERS regular
edited December 2008 in Games and Technology
Certain games I can't just play and for whatever reasion Oblivion and FallOut 3 make me really sick. Anyone have games that does the same thing to them?
Simulation sickness
Simulation sickness, or simulator sickness, is a condition where a person exhibits symptoms similar to motion sickness caused by playing computer/simulation/video games.[1]
The most common theory for the cause of simulation sickness is that the illusion of motion created by the virtual world, combined with the absence of motion detected by the inner ear, causes the area postrema in the brain to infer that one is hallucinating and further conclude that the hallucination is due to poison ingestion. The brain responds by inducing nausea and mass vomiting, to clear the supposed toxin.[7] According to this theory, simulation sickness is just another form of motion sickness.
The symptoms are often described as quite similar to that of motion sickness. Some can range from headache, drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, vomiting and sweating. A research done at the University of Minnesota had students play Halo for less than an hour, and found that up to 50 percent felt sick afterwards.[10]
In a study conducted by U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences in a report published May 1995 titled "Technical Report 1027 - Simulator Sickness in Virtual Environments", out of 742 pilot exposures from 11 military flight simulators, "approximately half of the pilots (334) reported post-effects of some kind: 250 (34%) reported that symptoms dissipated in less than 1 hour, 44 (6%) reported that symptoms lasted longer than 4 hours, and 28 (4%) reported that symptoms lasted longer than 6 hours. There were also 4 (1%) reported cases of spontaneously occurring flashbacks".[11][12]

My friend can't play FPS games because he gets sick. He can't watch them unless he's about 10ft away from the TV at the minimum. Normally he sits further than that.

An ex-coworker of mine gets pretty sick, especially GTA4. He loves the game, but can only play for 10 min or so before he gets sick.

He can't play Halo 3 at all.

Never experienced motion sickness before, at least due to a game.

I could even play that Marathon: Durandal on the XBLA that seemed to make everyone sick no problem.

For some reason the game The Darkness made me sick when I played it, I think it had to do with the dark atmosphere and the weird camera angles. No other game has made me sick though.

Never really had it myself, certainly not with any modern games. Mirror's Edge, Condemned, and the usual suspects I'm fine with.

I do sometimes get a headache after more than an hour playing older, really low res PC games. Early/bad 3D hurts my eyes too, like pretty much anything on the original Playstation.

I recently played Doom II. It makes me sick after a few minutes of playing it. Apart from that, just about any Monolith Lithtech engine (both N.O.L.F. games, F.E.A.R, AVP2, etc...) game will make me sick after a while. I cannot play FPS on consoles either. I don't know if it has to do with the refresh on Televisions, the distance from the screen, or not having my forarms firmly planted on a desk.

EDIT: I can't play Fallout 3 with the controller either. I get sick from the motion not being natural compared to using a mouse.

I find this "sickness" rather weird as some games will do it, others won't.

Personally, I have no issues with Fallout 3 or Oblivion. I remember the first time I got sick, it was playing the game Dark Forces on PC (a FPS in the Star Wars universe). More recently, I purchased STALKER on Steam for 5$ and the way the "head " of the character moves every time you walk would make me dizzy until I installed a mod that eliminated that feature (and thus allowing me to play).

there was another game that made me sick last year but I just can't remember which one it was. I remember having to play in a well lighted room and take breaks every 30 minutes or so.

those are more the exception than the norm. I can play some FPS all day without a single problem.. it's just "some" games for some reasons...

I only get sick from FPS games where the screen tilts to the sides while moving. It makes me very sick very fast and just pisses me off in general because it's dumb as fuck and only retarded developers could possibly think anyone wobbles left and right while walking/running.

It's more to do with the images on the TV are moving, giving you a sensation of movement, while everything around the TV is staying still. It confuses the brain in some people.

I'm starting to get motion sickness for the first time playing Dead Space's zero-g environments. Specifically when Isaac lands on a floor it takes me a moment to re-orient my personal sense of spatial awareness relative to the game's environment, which can become a headache. I guess the camera shift doesn't help.

Extended play periods on Guitar Hero/Rock Band can make me have mild motion sickness. It's likely more eyestrain then motion sickness but after a few hrs on those games my vision is messed up enough I won't drive for about 20 minutes after.

Same for me. No games really cause it, but the darkness gave it to me a little. Nothing serious, just had to stop every half-hour or so for a break.

My girlfriend had a similar experience. She played through Portal, from the beginning, all the way to
Just after the fire where GlaDOS tries to kill you
and decided to stop playing, since her stomach wasn't feeling too good. A few minutes later, I noticed she was in the bathroom, throwing up.

The next day, she powered through the rest of the game, determined to finally beat it. Surprisingly, she made it all the way through the rest of the game without going to the bathroom again.

    She's a trooper, alright.

I've heard that if you get headaches or slightly motion sick while playing, you should try turning on a lamp at the edge of your vision. It seems to help a lot of people.

That said, the Metroid games on the Wii give me an excruciating headache anytime I just watch them for more than a couple minutes.

I first had this happen to me playing GoldenEye with my friends in high school. I also could only play Portal for a short amount of time before I had to stop or get sick.

At this point it seems like the larger the HUD in the game the less chance of me getting sick there is. I did get sick from Fallout 3 but only when I already had a headache, since that one time I haven't had a problem. Portal was particularly bad since it has almost no HUD to speak of.
