Game Makers Getting Smart - Cut prices at 3 months

jozerojozero Registered User regular
edited December 2008 in Games and Technology
Looks like game publishers are finally clueing in on how to curtail used game market. Release a title at $60 for the must have first folks, then about 3 months later drop the price to $30 or $40. Its happened with several ubisoft titles recently.

For me personally it makes a world of difference. I'd much rather buy a game new for say $35 and have it go to the publishers / creators pockets than a used game shop, but the $60 is a bit insane for my blood.

If any publishers are reading this please note this trend. I'm way more likely to pay $35 for a new game, keep the game, then later on if I liked it even spend 5 or 10 bucks on DLC.

I would be more happy with game prices if I wasn't paying $100 for them because I live in a wealthier part of the world.

Seriously. the $=£ bullshit needs to stop. Valve just got in on that shit with Steam and that means I won't be buying Steam games for a while.

    China sells games for ....

    Oh wait...never mind.

Actually, they sell them for 70Yuan, which is like $10 US, but we are talking abotu Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, and counter strike. All you WoW players though, eat your heart out at paying only $2-5 US for a month.

Nah not for a few months since the pound became worthless.

Still, 65-70 dollars at the moment is still a price hike for no reason. On Steam they use £1 = $1 as do Ubisoft on their online store and EA.

And people in America complain of high prices. I have not felt I got a good deal on a game for a long time, which is why I buy fewer and fewer and games.

That's not true. Steam have at no point done £1=$1. It used to be in dollars, and gotten for exchange rate + vat, and now we get stuff at slightly higher prices but still less than parity in numerical amounts.

But yeah, we get raped on most things. At one point we were paying well clear of four times the price for an equivalent HDTV.

Ubisoft is the only publisher I know of that drops the prices of most of their games insanely fast in a short amount of time even if they're popular. It happened with both the Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six series. I'm not sure if it's the fact that they sell well or don't have much faith in the franchise demanding a higher price tag.

The only reason I bought the new PoP game is for the LE that was only through the pre-order promotion. It didn't even take a whole week before the price fell to $40.

Give it 6 months and the prices of every game will drop.
6 months just give them enough time to patch everything right.

If you can afford the wait give it one year.
You will be buying games at around US$30.
And 1 year is more than enough time for them to patch everything right.

Somebody PM me whenever Nintendo decides to take it's head out of it's ass and start dropping game prices.

The reason I haven't rebought a DS is that the cart prices on anything other than shovelware never go down.

I was in a big box earlier today and I saw the pokemon gamees still at $34.99, which was a little surprising until I saw a copy of Super Mario 64 still priced at $29.99, and it was released like four years ago.

And buying a game one year later pays off.
    1) You get a cheaper game with all bugs fixed or added content release.
    or
    2) You get a Director Cut/Extra version with extra contents.

Is it worth to be an early supporter buying the game on the week of release?

Buying a game later makes sense in most cases. However with some online games you need to buy early because if you don't the community dries up or turns to shit if you wait too long.

With all these game development shops closing I just want a legit way to A] not spend $60 on a game B] have some dough go to the developers that make the games.

If my favorite game developer shuts down due to financial reasons I'd be mightily pissed, but if my local gamestop shuts down I couldn't care less.

There has to be an in between solution, and for some reason only Ubisoft is clueing in. Well, them and the Apple Store. Lets the developer sell directly to the consumer, and the developer gets to keep most of the dough (AND avoids all the annoying business stuff like hosting and payment processing). I wish most transactions worked like that.

My pet peeve in regards to game pricing.

Call of Duty 4 is still like £50 new or £35 preowned, or similar.

And it's gotta be at least a year since it came out.

And it's only Call of Duty 4, as far as I've noticed.

    Why is that?

Ubisoft is the best for dropping prices. Wait a month or two and the price WILL drop, guaranteed. They're great about that.

Nintendo is the worst, bar none. They do not drop prices, ever. The only time I've ever seen a Nintendo game drop in price was when it went Player's Choice, which we don't even have this generation.

My big deal is that if a sequel to a game is already out the game before it should really be dropped in price by at least half. As someone mentioned, Call of Duty 4 is still way up there in price. I'd like to try it out based on the hype, but if I wasn't going to buy it new when it came out I'm sure as hell not going to buy a game that's been out that long at pretty well the same damned price. There's no incentive. Another example was when my girlfriend wanted a Mario Party game. She really wanted ANY of them for gamecube. It didn't matter. When we got there though they were all pretty much full price still, which didn't make sense because there were 2 or 3 released after one of them, even. That's the reason why I own very few Nintendo games at all. They're games I'd like to play but I'm just not die-hard about them so I wait just like any other game that I'm not REALLY into. Then I end up waiting waaaaay too long because they never drop in price, and soon I just don't buy it at all.

This generation has been pretty horrible for price drops. I feel really bad because I would have bought Folklore at some point had it dropped like most of last gen's games did, but I still only see it new for 60 bucks. That's insane!

The other thing that bugs me is something like what they did with Gears of War. I want to try it out, again based on other people's hype. But I was waiting for it to go to at most 30 bucks. So what do they do when it starts to get around that price? They discontinue that version and re release another version at 40 dollars. Then I had to wait for that one to drop in price.

The problem with dropping prices quickly is that it tells people who would pay full price to wait. Every time I buy a PS3/360 game I have to estimate how soon will it drop in price so as to judge whether or not it would be better to wait. With DS games I don't have to do this because chances of it being half-price next month is next to zero.

That's true. Back in Thailand, I remember paying the equivalent of $10-$20 for games. Legit copies, though MOST stores you find there sell bootlegs.

Bootlegs you paid by the CD which makes the legit games even more appealing if they come on many CDs (I guess now it'd be DVDs though)

I don't exactly support piracy, at least I was a huge buyer before I left 'civilization'. When I went to New Zealand for Christmas I bought legit UT3 and when I went to Canada I bought Spore. Its just that where I am I can't buy legit games. Even if someone says they are selling legit, the CD-key is guaranteed to have been written down and spread about like chlamydia already.

For example when you buy a PSP here it comes hacked from the box. They pre-hack it before they sell them to customers! And i guarantee the sales persons have no idea how to un-hack them. They show you a binder full of photocopies of game boxes and you choose which you like and they install them on your psp memory stick for free.

I love computer games but I live in stinky Beijing. Would you just not play the games you like if you were in my position?

I think missing out on extra content is the main down side of buying on release.
In these days with the internet and social media being a medium of a game release, bug fixes, patches and added content add to the amount of contact and discussion regarding the game. Its part of the life these games go through.
Im not saying that everygame should be unfinished, half completed and buggier than an ant sandwich but fully perfect games tend to rate top scores, get played and then dropped. It kind of why i prefer PC gaming to console gaming, for the possibility of fixes, content and more.
