That is because Peanuts aren't in the same group as walnuts or almonds, though the genetic link to allergies to them is very strong. I for example am allergic to both but to a much lower degree than peanuts. If I ate one whole almond I would be vomiting for an hour or so. If I ate one whole peanut you would be looking at a coma in that time without medical aid (which has happened to me, not nice).
The real link here is the way my body is reacting to the oils in these foods. There are strong links to latex and peanut allergies for the same reasons.
And he is right, being that allergic to such a common food item is incredibly restrictive. I once had to go to the ER because my girlfriend had eaten some peanut M and Ms like half an hour before we kissed.
Checking ingredients of foods has become such a habit for me. Which is one of the reasons why I make nearly everything myself and rarely get takeout.
Also, I never eat Indian or anything from the subcontinent due to the wide variety of nuts they use. Chinese or western european is the only takeout I can grab.
I know a guy who is allergic to oranges. Now that I feel sorry for. I fucking love those things.

sometimes i just eat a spoonful or two with a glass of milk, i started it back when i was trying to bulk up in high school, but i occassionally have a spoon or two of peanut butter for lunch
