BattleForge: CCG goes on a blind date with RTS and gets knocked up!

I was skeptical at first, but tried it and wow. Really impressed.
It is an RTS but your units are made up of a deck of cards. Each card needs a specific orb to be cast, also some need multiple orbs. There is online play, and loot in the form of cards and booster packs (That you get to open and flip!!). You login but there is a campaign. The campaign can be played through by your self or in a party.
There are no traditional RTS structures and build methods. Each card has a power cost. Power and orbs are obtained through out the world by constructing power stations on specific nodes, or orbs on their respective stations. They can be destroyed and taken by the other team so you will need tower cards to defend them. Units can be summoned anywhere you have friendly/allied units or structures on the map.
There are also spell cards. These spawn pretty sweet looking powers, from meteor showers to corpse explosions. Many units also have special powers as well.
Here is the card setup:
Now for some screenies.
Quick tutorial to show the basics. That interface is not how it looks now, its a lot more slick.
Go to fileplanet or the battleforge website and download it. Go. Now.
You fail to mention that in order to download 'it' (it being a beta atm) and play it you need to either pre-order the game or sign up for fileplanet's paid-for download service.
I too am interested in this game, but I don't put money down on unknown games or developers. Signing up for the beta on that page without paying anything yields nothing now.
I read a preview about it and it sounded really good, dunno about the whole buying cards part though.
Other games have tried at this mechanic and found niche playerbases yet ultimately failed. Yugioh Duel Evolution (straight up card-game with a MMORPG-styled instance areas to explore and find people in) and StarChamber (card game/space TBS) come to mind.

You don't have to pay for new cards, you can earn BF points (Used to get booster packs) from just playing the game. You can also sell any cards you have that you don't want for BF points, or trade with BF points. At least according to the ingame tooltips.
Got a chance to play around with it for a match or two, and I'm actually pretty impressed.
The card mechanic's pretty interesting. Each card's got a specific amount of charges, which means you can use it that many times. (So, a card that summons a unit of footmen might have four charges, which you can use all immediately to get four units (if you've got the power to pay for it), or you can just summon two, and keep the rest for quick backup if you need them.) But, if a card runs out of charges, you're not screwed, a charge regenerates after about a minute (probably not the exact cooldown, but you get the general idea).
The OP mentioned you can summon units anywhere you've got units, but it does have a drawback. If you summon in the field, away from any of your nodes, the units spawn at half-health. Being close to a node will heal a unit, though.
So, yeah, I'm definitely keeping a eye on this now.

I played StarChamber for a bit, and it was very good - imagine a turn-based board game combined with a CCG.
I spent maybe 20 bucks total on boosters. I ended up being given another 800 common cards from various StarChamber veterans -- since you can only have four copies of a card in a deck, they ended up with plenty of spares they couldn't use, so it was common to give them away to newcomers since StarChamber had such a small playerbase.
I've been playing with DoA today and the game is fun if somewhat challenging. The map we just did consisted of taking and holding 4 objectives with units attacking them at regular periods. We got to the point where we defend the middle point then got demolished by huge waves of monsters since our power and units had gone to holding the other 4 points. It was fun if ultimately fustrating due to the unit cap.
I haven't tried PvP yet, but it's kinda simple, and you often spend more time walking to and from objectives than actually fighting. Also, fights can become a huge clusterfuck, units do the whole 'phasing through' each other thing so it's easy to lose track of them sometimes.

Yeah, I've noticed PVP happens mostly in the T1 or T2 stages, so you have to have the best T1/2 units. That happens to be the stupid flying ice eagle thing from Tier 2 Ice decks. It's just a speed to who can get the first node and ultimately who gets to the other persons base first.
It was frustrating to have my starter base be completely open and have a single enemy make it into my base area and just spawn a mortar tower. I obviously couldn't compete with a mortar tower with simple T1 units.
I guess I'm just not used to the strats needed and I was using a PvE deck at the time, but it seems like its a rush match. Though one time I had a couple small battles going on and happened to get my T3 node. As soon as I did that and spawned a Mutating Frenzy, the other person just left the match. :x
I guess I just need more practice and a deck with some cheapass units (Read: FLYING FUCK ICE EAGLE)
So I've tried it a little. It's fairly laggy on my system and I have some graphical glitches and my system is still pretty good so... yeah.
Gameplay-wise, I'm still not quite sure I like it that much. The only thing you get from playing the game is basically upgrades. At the moment, it seems you can only get BF through money (or selling cards to other people, who got their BF through money), and you need BF for cards. You'll want 3 copies of every card in order to maximally upgrade the number of times they can be used in a battle before needing recast timers.

Currently in beta you cant even buy BF points, you just get 2000 from acct creation
SO did anyone else get into the beta through signups? Or anyone else actually playing at all? Just got everything downloaded and updated today, and it's pretty fun so far. I also have 3 friend beta codes, so PM if you're interested.
Another site I read has a special code you can use to get into the beta for free "while it lasts." I signed up and will check it out when I get home. Sounds like fun to me...

Yeah, I did. It ran fine on my laptop with it's 8600M GT.
In some really odd way, it feels a bit like Guild Wars, but in an RTS. It's just nowhere near as nice to use though. My two-bit opinion is, there's no fucking way I'd pay retail for this game *AND* spend money on boosters. If it was free, and then you could buy some boosters, I might think about it, but still would lean on not bothering with it in the face of some other good RTS games coming out..
So this apparently came out two weeks ago. I'm downloading the demo right now. Anybody have it?

I played the beta for about a week. The concept is really appealing, it's just executed so very poorly. And the price of entry is just too much; there's no reason why the game should be going for retail when it gives you little more than the client itself. It just felt way too money-grubbing for me to get any enjoyment out of it.
I'm bumping this thread because I just became aware of this game and it is now apparently free to play, since judging from the previous posts it used to be a retail box.
I'm downloading as I type this, but the previews make it out to be pretty decent looking, and I love me some CCG mechanics.
Semi-bumping this thread for this extremely fun game, which is nowFREE to play. The developers have done a good job of releasing free DLC since release as well, including new maps, cards, and balancing. Only problem now is the lack of good players during the off-hours. If you have some time to kill and like RTS or CCGs, give this a shot. I'm on the Overlord server, same name .
Yup, it's a fun game, and it can only get better. I actually bought the box after trying the free to play. I wanted the points anyway, and the 4 decks are a nice base for other decks.
I suck and haven't had much time to play, but if someone is interested in a Tome game or one of the co-op PvE missions I'm lyrae on the US server.
I think I'm the only person from here playing this, but in case anybody was interested, a free expansion (which is basically new cards and card types) is launching next month.

Eh, seems the same as any other pre-order incentive to me. *shrug*

You just need to register and then login for it to accept if you don't already have an ESL account. Takes 2 minutes.
