New to the Battlestar Galactica series. Where do I start?
Should I just start with season 1 or the mini-series? I want to get to the good stuff asap, since I have to convince my wife to keep watching it, but of course, I don't wanna leave too much out.
Sweet. It looks like the Mini-series is on the first disk of season one. That makes it easier...
What about Battlestar Galactica: Razor and Battlestar Galactica: The Story So Far? Both are available on netflix.

razor is a side story that takes place between two of the seasons. It's interesting, but not necessary. the story so far is basically a clip show, I believe.
The first season can get pretty corny but it gets a lot better later on as there are less ridiculous lines being spewn out. If it is a problem just try and soldier on to season 2.
Just echoing what others have said. Miniseries -> seasons 1-3 -> Razor -> Sci-fi Should air the first 1/2 of season 4 again soon -> Party on Jan 16th when it comes back on the air.
Battlestar is awesome. Welcome to the dark side. There are cookies on the table.
A lot of things? I just assumed it was fuck, or a similar kind of curse.

Copy/paste from the Battlestar Wiki (which is definitely worth visiting for postepisode analysis):
"Frak" is a potent profanity in the language of the Twelve Colonies. It is a bowdlerized version of the real-life expletive "fuck", and can seemingly be used in the same ways:
* The term can describe sexual relations:
o "You know what? I don't care who or what he fraks. He saved my ass down there, all right?" - Kara "Starbuck" Thrace (Flight of the Phoenix)
o "You're not still frakkin' Dualla are ya?" - Thrace to Major Adama (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II)
* The term, as a pejorative, can be used to curse someone you vilify or find disgusting:
o "Frakkin' rats" - Karl "Helo" Agathon (Bastille Day)
o "Frak you" - Helena Cain (Resurrection Ship, Part II)
o "This frakker's mine." - William Adama (Razor Flashbacks)
* The term can be used in several variations and compound words:
o "clusterfrak" - Diana "Hardball" Seelix (The Ties That Bind)
o "We are well and truly frakked." - Alex "Crashdown" Quartararo (The Hand of God)
o "You know this game's got frak-all to do with the real thing, right?" - Samuel Anders (Crossroads, Part I)
o "Frak's sake" - Lee "Apollo" Adama (Miniseries, Night 2)
o "Talk to me, you motherfrakker!" - Cally Henderson Tyrol (Valley of Darkness)
o "Command frak-up" - Pvt. Scott Kelso (Final Cut)
o "frakwit" - Chiefs Galen Tyrol and Laird (Pegasus (Extended Version))
o "frakkoids" - Chief Tyrol (The Woman King)
o "I guaran-frakkin-tee you, I will put you down this time for good." - Kara Thrace (Scar)
* The term also is used as an adjective to describe an action or object that is subjectively considered outrageous, extreme, or ill-advised.
o "Does anybody else think that this plan is frakking nuts?" - Gaius Baltar (Fragged)
* The term can be used as a means of conveying shock or surprise:
o "Oh, frak me! Radiological alarm!" - Alex Quartararo (33)
* The term can also be used to express agreement:
o "Frakkin' A!" - Sue-Shaun (Resistance)
* It can be used in acronyms:
o "RFN" is an acronym for "Right Frakking Now" - Lee Adama (Valley of Darkness)
o "Fubar" is an acronym for "Frakked Up Beyond All Recognition" - Galen Tyrol (A Day in the Life)
o "FNG" (pronounced "foon-gee") is an acronym for "Frakking New Guy" - Louanne Katraine (Scar)
Im now re-watching the entire series in preparation for Season 4 part 2. Now going through Razor having finished all the episodes to date.
I'd forgotten how awesome it is.
Firefly did a far better job with their expletives.
I think that's just because they were able to use actual expletives. BSG did well enough with their invented curses.
I probably don't have to explain that this all started with the original BSG series (the one from the 70's) that was on ABC. The network censors wouldn't allow them to say "fuck", so the writers of the time chose to replace it with "frak". Honestly, this was probably the best they could come up with in 1978.
Even though SciFi is a cable network and could theoretically air the original epithet, they're using it as a throwback to the original series.

OT: I so hate that they use the word "Frag" wrongly in the show. Frag is when you kill someone in UT not a swear word in a SciFi show :-(
In addition to the many various pointing outs of how wrong you are, I'd also like to point out that "Frag" is not when you kill someone in UT.
It's origin is: assassination of an unpopular member of one's own fighting unit (occasionally using a fragmentation grenade - cause it's easier that way)
It has since evolved to be used as a catch-all term for killin manz, but since you got the initial phrase wrong anyway, I figure'd you might need the history lesson.
:P
I've been to the thread GoodOmens. It's what inspired this thread. It also inspired me to go to get the game a a local hoppy shop.
I was quite suprised when you revealed yourself as a Cylon.
I'm happy to hear that, I was hoping that I wasn't obvious. I didn't want to slip up because with Starbuck's weakness I'd end up in the brig for a long time.

Now if we could just get it on Blu-Ray, I'd be totally stoked.
The
FRAK
You talking about?
Yeah please turn in your nerd card.
Oh, and by the way, there's a group of us doing a PbP game here on Penny Arcade. Imagine that.
And I just happen to have the thread right here: http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?t=76325
And I just happen to be the Cylon. Well, at least a Cylon. There might be more. I don't know yet. But check it out.

Yes.
If you want to be all 20th-century about it, yes.

I think that's just because they were able to use actual expletives. BSG did well enough with their invented curses.
They cheated by using a language they knew their audience couldn't understand.
Which I guess isn't really cheating.
Trouble is they often say it like it's with a 'g'!
No they don't.
You're not allowed to watch any more.
The 'K' is heavily pronounced every time it's used.
I've never heard 'frag' from anyone.
You need to turn in your mouse. Now. Also, anything in your room that has "eXtreme" or any variation thereof needs to be disposed of.
I probably don't have to explain that this all started with the original BSG series (the one from the 70's) that was on ABC. But in teh sense of killing someone or something.
Frak is distinct and is what all the hubbub's about!
