I'm trying to remember the name of a book I read (might have been a few short stories or different books).

Things I Remember:
    Main character is pulled over but the guy in the car with him (hitchhiker?) steals the policeman's black ticket book Main character throwing money from a balcony down onto a crowd (in a foreign country?) Main character learns something (how to be invisible?) from staring at the black bit of a candle and eliminating
all other thoughts
