My PC keyboard is starting to crap out on me and I figure now is a good time to treat myself to a gaming keyboard. Can someone recommend me a good one?
The Sytek Cyborg is a good alternative to the G15 if you want to save about 20 bucks and don't mind not having an LCD readout (similiar functionality otherwise though).
The Cyborg and the G15 are the same price everywhere I look. Are you perhaps thinking about the Eclipse II instead?
I don't think the Eclipse II has any extra functionality over a regular keyboard, besides backlighting. And what kind of PC gamer needs to look at the keys? I guess it's not a bad choice if you want a big fancy keyboard but there are better options. I've seen the Razer Tarantula on clearance for around $30 at Circuit City and it at least has macro keys.
logitech would probably be a good bet, G15's are great, at least the old ones are, not sure about the new ones (i heard they werent quite as good)
the biggest thing to look for in a gaming keyboard is the ability to press a lot of keys at once without it not allowing you to press any more. there's a name for this, i forget what its called though, anti-ghosting or something?
a good way to test it (if you have access to it) is to hold down both shift keys and type 'the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog' ... since that covers all the keys (if it missing a lot, then its not very good).
I have a $7 Logitech keyboard from Newegg and the keys feel better than any gaming keyboard I have ever tried. If you're really looking forwards to spending a ton of money I'd buy a Model M from PCKeyboard.com.
See, I have a nice wireless one, it didn't cost all that much, and I certainly don't notice any latency. I only got it because I spilt milk all over my previous one, and I was able to get it for really really cheap.
It's not a gaming one, but I can't imagine any improvements to it that would aid gaming.
Yeah, I've ruined a bunch of keyboards by spilling soda into them, so I wouldn't dare pick up an expensive one. I have the most rudimentary, inexpensive Microsoft keyboard I could find.
It's probably the best one I've ever had, too.

My girlfriend has owned an eclipse for a little over a year. Certain keys no longer work (arrow keys, for example). The light up is a good feature, though. Don't spend more than $50 on a keyboard. In fact, the best keyboard I have ever owned is the cheap, wired logitech one. Reliable as hell.

Thats actually the keyboard my team at work decided we liked best out of all the ones IT was willing to get us...(I develop software for a living). The are surprisingly decent.

thats the exact keyboard i have, and its almost perfect. i dont like the arrangement of the pgup/pgdown/home etc keys, but ive gotten used to it over time. aside from that very small issue its a really good keyboard. doesnt hurt that it costs $15, also.
It's bit a bulky, which I'm not a huge fan of. On the other hand, I like the back lighting (you can change it between blue, purple, and red, and adjust the brightness), and the thing's sturdy enough that you could probably beat someone to death with it.
Whatever the cheapo Microsoft keyboard name is, get that. And their two button mouse. Spending more on anything else to me seems like needless extravagance.

Yeah! What the hell sort of gamer could make use of more than two buttons on a mouse?

I agree with the keyboard but your crazy on the mouse.

Seriously. I've never understood the need for more than two buttons. Well excluding clicking the mouse wheel. I'm a keyboard hotkey man through and through.
For what it's worth, I was underwhelmed by the G15 I had.
The keys were a bit too "soft" on the press for my liking. I found the LCD screen to be pretty underused for most games.
Plus the thing is fraggin' huge and didn't fit comfortably on my desk.
It wasn't a horrible keyboard IMO, just not worth it for me at the price at cost. When it broke (my own fault) I never considered getting another one.
I have a Saitek Eclipse II that I like better. The "feel" of the keys is closer to what I like and it's not as hefty. It doesn't have a lot of the macro features that the G15 had, nor the LCD display, but like I said I didn't use those much anyways.

How about being able to bind those other buttons to functions in the game?
I've got 7 buttons on mine (a Microsoft Habu), and I'm still not sure it's enough.

Very useful for fps. Means you take your hand off WASD less often.
Put me in with the crowd that doesn't see the point in gamer-branded gear. I have a cheapo wired keyboard (white letters on black keys, better for in a dark room) and a Logitech wired laser mouse with two buttons and a mousewheel, and I'm perfectly happy. Still, each to their own.

I recently bound mouse 4 and mouse 5 to move forward and move backward so I could recline while playing TF2. I fell asleep playing pyro and woke up standing over half a dozen flaming bodies once.

Nothing wrong with the G15 though.
I type pretty fast too, can do around 100 wpm, but I don't really get annoyed by the sound levels.
Dear God, that is the ugliest thing. I'm sure you'd be a huge hit at a 1987 Star Trek convention.

What is the different between a gaming and a normal keyboard?
About $50.

Oh and stay away from anything wireless.

Edit: Also, if you like the G15 and hate the screen, they have a cheaper version called the G11 which is the G15 sans LCD.... :

They also have a Nostromo N52 knockoff called the G13:

I call it a knockoff but it actually looks a lot more comfortable than the N52.
holy god it's hideous.
