Drawing that I'm doing for my girlfriend's birthday, which is on the 23rd.

Constructive criticism would be appreciated.

You gave her football eyes. You should study the actual parts of the eye so that you can draw them better You have to remember that they are spheres that are covered by eyelids. You are drawing with symbols that you learned as a child. Once you learn to actually draw what you see and not what you think you see then you will be a better artist.

I understand that your drawing wasn't really a realistic portrait but you need to do more than draw a couple of pointed ovals for a person's eyes.

Cute girl, bad reference. Flash photography does not make for an attractive photo, let alone a drawing. Not to sound pompous, but I would hesitate to attempt a drawing of a photo like this, and I have a lot of drawing under my belt. I think you are swimming upstream here.

If it were me, I would start over with better reference. Does she know you are doing the drawing? Would she be willing to pose for a proper shoot?

To make my point further, I have taken your reference and adjusted the levels in photoshop to give you a better idea of the light distribution, and why it does not make for a good reference photo.

This more clearly shows the distribution of light in your photograph. Because of this washed out light, every line or indication you draw on her face is going to make her look less attractive by emphasizing well, lines (wrinkles). Drawing women is about subtlety, and this photo leaves almost no room for it.

Then take one. Just don't be like "HEY I'M TAKING A PICTURE OF YOU NO WAY NO HOW GONNA USE IT TO MAKE A PORTRAIT OF YOU GET IN THE LIGHT".

She's looking really stretched out. Here's a side-by-side with the original and a distorted version to try to bring it closer to the photo:
