Magazine Subscriptions

edited January 2009 in Debate and/or Discourse
So in light of the news that EGM is gone for good, I figured I should make a thread where everyone recommends their favorite magazine subscriptions. Maybe I'll find a couple that catch my eye.

But first, to eliminate the obvious pick: Do Not Name Porno Magazines.

I had a TIME magazine subscription for about a year, which had some entertaining articles, but came too frequently for me to read each mag thoroughly.

Entertainment Weekly is another consideration, but I'm not a big fan of celebrity gossip. If I want the latest movie news, there's always Ain't It Cool.

And finally, for anime I highly enjoyed Newtype USA (which sadly, also closed shop), but haven't seen any other magazine that measures up.

So anyway, list your favorite subscriptions and why.

I really enjoy Smithsonian magazine--they have really interesting articles that last for more than a page, and their recurring columns are great (esp. The Object at Hand, where they look at one object from the Smithsonian collections in detail).

I don't subscribe to any magazines.

Well, that's not 100% true. I get New England Journal of Medicine sent to me to my work. It's a holdover from when I was doing secondary research for the pharma branch of my company. (and they put "Dr." in front of my name which makes me giggle.)

I do have a few magazines I really like, though. Computer Power User (CPU) is awesome - it's a computer magazine that's actually useful, with modding tips and software reviews for power users and such.

I occasionally pick up Utne Reader. (True story: I recently bought a copy of the Utne Reader as an impulse buy while in the checkout line at Whole Foods largely because I liked the picture of Obama on the cover. If that doesn't make me a leftie moonbat yuppie, I don't know what does.)

Gothic Beauty is one of my guilty pleasures. Because, y'know, tattooed goth girls. <3

Scientific American does a quarterly "Mind" special issue which is fun, as pop sci magazines go.

I don't know if it's published anymore, but there used to be a not-lame competitor to Cosmo called Jane that my ex used to pick up that I liked to read. It was a little more down to earth and a little edgier than the usual fashion trash.

2600... Most of each issue is pointless, but I always find at least one article that I can put to use.

And it sucks big donkey dick now, but it used to be cool: Adbusters. Now it's just turned into yet another brand, and become the very thing it purports to hate.

I've been thinking of getting The New Yorker and Analog. I'm not familiar with The Atlantic enough to justify if and The Economist is way too much. I also got issues of Scientific American from my dad before I went off to college (he has a dental practice, so whenever he got a new issue for the waiting room he'd either bring home last months or let me read the new one before he put it on the rack).

    Mens Workout

Not to be confused with Mens Fitness or Mens Health, which are very straight forward fitness magazines.

Mens Workout is the same fitness and nutrition articles with really hot guys in various states of sweaty semi-nudity strewn throughout the magazine. Now, I realize that the OP said no pornos, but that's the beauty of Mens Workout. It isn't porn. So I can take it with me underway and not get busted for gay porn. Because it's not gay porn. Technically.

if I had the cash, I would subscribe to the Times Higher Education Supplement. It's a weekly magazine/newspaper all about Higher Education, mostly in the UK, but with the main news from abroad as well. I've been reading it for years and years (my parents always had a subscription), but as I don't have the cash up-front I end up paying twice as much to buy it every week.

    No one mentioned Wired yet?

The only video game magazine I can justify spending the money to subscribe to is game informer, sure the reviews suck, but they're the only one that actually has new information that you don't hear about a month ahead of time online. There a couple really good UK ones, but they cost way too much a year to be worth subscribing to

So, I know you said no porno, but... Playboy. Seriously. I know it's a big joke to say "I read it for the articles", but Playboy really does have a lot of good non-nude content in it. Similarly, Suicide Girls is the same way but online.

    But... Wired, definitely.

There was some politician I did a report on in high school... I can't remember who it was now... whose only full-length magazine interview at the time was published in Playboy.

That was a slightly awkward conversation with the librarian at the magazine desk.

Sometimes it gets too hard to concentrate (the blinking lights and sound effects). Reading is always better.

I'd really like something like the Rolling Stones or Spin magazine, but without the articles on music or music artists. I'd like to read stuff like some of their articles about urban life stories, or the designated "worst country on Earth" (started with an S, can't remember, but it was a nice slice of hell where kids wore the skulls of people they killed and also made their enemies watch their severed hearts get eaten).

I've seen a lot of Otaku USA around. How is that?

I don't buy SFX (I'm not quite a big enough Sci Fi fan), but I often find it amusing when I spot it at the newsagents.

The cover art is regularly overlayed on the title, making the magazine appear to be aimed at "discerning gentlemen".

Paste - Some other guy listed this. Probably the best current American music mag, although it caters to 'high-art'/indie tastes almost exclusively.

Psychology Today - Because it's awesome, and a lot of it is practical. Tips for self improvement, new facts about psychological studies, etc. Very interesting read.

Seed - An absolutely incredible science magazine. Only six issues a year, but they're pretty much tomes of information compared to other magazines. It covers every area of 'science' in a practical sense, and it breaks everything down to be simple-to-understand, giving you all the background you need. Really an incredible book. It's kind of hard to explain the magazine, but I really can't recommend it enough.

Another mag I like: Yankee (stories, recipes, etc about living in New England).

They usually have quality articles on places that are surprisingly close to my house. The quality has dipped (I think they got bought by someone/got a new editor) but there's still some cool stuff.
