Anyone know of any Old School RPGs available that are like Bards Tale or Wizardy? I really like the create-a -whole-party of adventurers kind and I haven't seen those in a while.
This right here. It's an amazing game if you like those old-school RPGs, which you obviously do. I hear the sequel is good as well if you want to pick that one up too.

Also, Wizardry 8 for the PC is the last Wizardry game in the series and is probably my favorite RPG in the first person dungeon crawl style. Pick that one up if you can find a copy.
Wizardry 8.
I freaking loved Wizardry 8 on the PC, but its probably hard to find since I think it was only exclusively sold at gamestop or something. (They went bankrupt, only way they could publish it)
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
The Dark Spire. It's a DS RPG that Atlus is releasing and it looks very Wizardy-esque old school. In fact, it even has a retro graphics option (which I doubt I'll use since the visual style they're going with looks fantastic).
For almost all of these games you will have to run DOSBox. I cannot provide the games for you but some still exist in collections you can buy.
Ancients 1: Deathwatch
Ancients 2: Approaching Evil
Bard's Tale
Bard's Tale 2: The Destiny Knight
Amulets & Armor
Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos
Eye of the Beholder
Eye of the Beholder 2
Dungeon Hack
I haven't played many of those. Ancients 1 and 2 have full party creation, they are sort of by the book but fun. Dungeon Hack is awesome but there's no party creation, just you - but there is a lot of stuff in the game, it's long and complex. And Eye of the Beholder is supposed to be a good game.
This is my favorite first person RPG, Shining in the Darkness, available for download on the Wii Virtual Console. However there is no party creation, just you and two friends who join later, but it's a great game.
Baldur's Gate is a top-down isometric game that uses pseudo-turn-based rules (in real time), rather than actual turn-based first person dungeon-crawling. It is definitely not the same kind of "Old School RPGs" that the OP was talking about... the Infinity Engine games are probably more of the "next generation" of games (which includes Ultima 6 and 7), after the generation of RPGs that the original post was talking about. It probably deserves a different thread (and in fact, there have been several recent threads on the Infinity Engine games).

OP, are you talking about old school RPGs from that actual era, or new games?
If you are talking about the former, check out Dark Sun on DOS. Game kicks serious ass. The former? Well, I'm not big into JRPGs, sure others can fill you in.
I was actually referring to new games that are like those old school games. Thanks for the suggestions! I've played most it not all the older game people suggested. I had forgotten about wizardy on the ps2 though, I may check that out.

Good luck, it's a pretty rare game. (Like almost anything Atlus published.)
I got it for $12.99 used, so it shouldn't run much if you can track it down. It also has a really good story.
Dungeon Hack is pretty great. Randomly generated dungeons! Icewind Dale 2 is also great, Baldur's Gate + creating your whole party = fun for minmaxing nerds like me.
EoB, EoB2 and LoL are awesome and I really miss them. I wish I had an old DOS machine sitting around so I could still play them. I know there's DOSBox but it's just not the same.
Also, has anyone heard of Drakhen (not sure if that's the correct spelling)? Me and some buddies thought this game was the shit way back in the day.
I also had some RPG in 4 color CGA that was to hunt some ghosts and use chemicals to fight them. I don't remember the name, but damn was it fun!
oh man YES shining in the darkness fapfapfap. nostalgia.
uhh. what's the game coming out for the DS that's all dungeony? It looks pretty good. it has "classic" mode that makes the sprites all crappy and whatnot. hilarious.
The Avernum series of games is a bit similar to what you're looking for. If nothing else it allows you to create your own party of badasses. Here's the demo's. http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/products.html
Thanks, I already found an eBay auction for it that ends tomorrow. Be nice all of you, I called dibs!
Heh. Glad you said that. I was reading this thread and remembered I had always meant to get the Wizardry game for PS2, having played all the other iterations. I was so about to log onto ebay and bid. I'll give the copy you're bidding on a pass!
Why not buy the half.com ones? They're much cheaper... :P
Actually, the cheapest on Half is 20.95, game only no case/manual. The second cheapest is 25 but missing manual. A completed item search on eBay shows I'll pay in the range of 16-22 dollars for a good copy with everything, and there are three potential auctions that are reasonable. :P

If you manage to get a copy, we should get a nostalgia thread going. It's a criminally underappreciated game, even for Wizardry.

Do you really read the manual though? I know I've not touched one in... Shit, maybe before I was in High School...?

I know, me too, but it still gives me the warm fuzzies to at least have it. We should start a topic about game manuals, mainly when was the last time you touched one and why.

Hah I know what you mean. I say that stuff about the manual, but I am pretty picky about not having them as well... Unless it's a game I really, really want. Then I suck it up and deal with it.
I'd just like to advice against Etrian Odyssey. Yes, you travel around in a perspective similar to what the OP is looking for, but the game is really a JRPG in disguise (with a roguelike-lite mentality).
The OP needs to play every other game suggested so far, then he can consider spending money on EO. He especially needs to play Wizardry 8, which runs great on newer computers by the way.
I've just discovered there is actually a pretty big following for this game still, some even going so far as to make new engines to play it on modern platforms:

What? It's exactly like a Might and Magic game. What exactly is JRPG about it? All I can think of is the art.
A staple of the JRPG is a lack of customization or min/maxing, a lower number of items, an overarching focus on the story, and generally easy gameplay. EO has none of those. You can create five different characters from 7 or 8 classes and build them different ways to be effective in different ways. It has a ton of items and is pretty brutal in its difficulty, requiring mapping by hand like those old first person games. The story takes a big backseat, there's as much as in a Might and Magic game.
Even if it somehow still qualifies as a JRPG in any aspect, it has much, much more in common with Might and Magic than Final Fantasy.

In that case, Etrian Odyssey II.
