Flower delivery

So, I am trying to send my girlfriend flowers as a nice way to start off the new semester, but after Googling around for delivery sites and such, I'm kind of at a loss as to what my best option is. She gets back to school before I do, so I figured it would maximize sweetness if I had them delivered to her as opposed to me bringing them (you know, like, "Thinking about you, see you soon!" or some such). Does anyone have suggestions as to a good service, or maybe even suggestions as to what sort of arrangement I should get? Bonus points if the delivery service lets me select a specific time on a day to have them delivered.

Thanks!

(I'm studying floristry, but as I'm in the UK I don't know of any sites.)
What sort of arrangement are you looking for? Something that she can keep for a few days thats foam based and will sit on her desk/table? Or a bouquet of flowers that are nicely packaged and she can place into a vase? If she'd prefer an arrangement thats foam based you can get a lot of different varieties, some that are modern, some traditional, some using tropical flowers and so on. If you're going for that option try to think if she will have a space for it as they can often be quiet large. If you're thinking of a bouquet its a little more traditional unless tropical flowers are used, of they're used decoratively. Classics like roses and single variety flowers are nice, but roses are quiet expensive and if you're on a budget a mixed bouquet could be just as good. Also, does she have a vase that she can then place the flowers into?

Does she have any colour preferences?
    Favourite flowers?
Will certain arrangements clash horribly with her home/room?
Will the scent of some flowers (like hyacinth) be too strong for her taste?

The best thing to do is keep these things in mind and shop around, the great thing about online sales is that you don't get the sale being pushed like in an ordinary florist's. If you've not sent her flowers before your safest bet is bouquet of flowers and a few pieces of foliage in her favourite colour.

I've been using http://www.proflowers.com/ for over 10 years and they have yet to let me down.

I've used the online services before, but it's best to just look up a local florist in the yellow pages and order something that way. The online services are just faxing your order to a local florist anyway, and taking a fee off the top as a middleman. And since you're not talking to anyone at the place that will actually be doing the arrangement, you're basically rolling the dice on whether they have what you ordered.

I've done this a few times with good success. The pricing was more reasonable then FTD and the arrangements came out very nicely.

I've used FTD in the past to send my mother flowers. No problem at all.

The online services don't have a lot of quality control over the local places. Things will often be lesser quality than they would provide for direct customers. Also if you go local directly they can tell you what they do or do not have available whereas the online services make you agree to replacements beforehand at the same price.

What about doing something unique and ordering the arrangement from here. I hate getting flowers as it seems a waste but one of these bad boys could feed her and her friends.

I have also had terrible results with online middlemen like ftp and 1800-flowers. Instead I would recommend looking up a local florist and giving them a call. All I ever do is say, "I need $50 of flowers, maybe some of these, make it springy, white and pink, etc). This has never let me down, though I guess it is still up to the quality of the local florist.

Although we usually send flowers for work type stuff, I've used edible arrangements a few times, and can definitely vouch. Freakin awesome.

Random flower delivery advice for both the OP and the peanut gallery:

    1. Mixing up and sending something sort of off-the-wall can be gold. Best plant I ever sent was a banzai tree and a tiny pair of clippers to a girl who was stressed out at her job.

    2. When scheduling for delivery, consider who is going to be around when she gets the flowers--you can get major bonus points with the right group of people if you're thoughtful about how you schedule the delivery. If your girlfriend spends a lot of time hanging out with her coworkers outside of work, for instance, have something delivered to her office, and they'll gush to her for a week about how awesome her boyfriend is.

Need her roommates to love you? Pay attention to her schedule, find out when they do their bonding time, and then have something delivered when they're all there.

Flowers fade, but gushing friends and colleagues are forever.

Just go to your local florist and talk to them. they can help you arrange something and then have it delivered from a local to her florist. its how things were done before the interwebs
