I personally am a fan of all the games released in japan and not in america. I think this mostly applies to the xbox 360. There are some good jrpg's released in america such as tales of vesperia, but I think we miss out on alot of good games.
eg. Most of the gundam games, alot of good rpg's, and more then anything FIGHTERS.
CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHY THE 360 HAS SUCH A LACK OF FIGHTING GAMES?o_O

Let's be careful here. Nothing yet has confirmed that he only enjoys these games BECAUSE they're japanese-only. It could very well be just him lamenting that not all games are available everywhere. I'll agree with him that there are many awesome japanese games that never made it out of Japan and that's a shame. For the DS/PS3/SNES, I import them. For the other systems, I can't unless I'd mod my console (and I don't mod). This is annoying (well, that and the language barrier).
You can bet that if I was rich, I'd have a Japanese Wii/360/PS2 sitting alongside the ones I already own, and I'd import all these games we've missed that look awesome.
What? There's a bunch of fighters on 360.
Dead or Alive 3
Virtua Fighter (5?)
Soul Calibur 4
Some 2d or cell shaded anime fighter... can't remember the name.
That weird Fighter/shmup hybrid
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix (Yes I like typing it out completely)
Street Fighter 4 coming pretty soon
DBZ games ( I think)
And there's probably some more I forgot or didn't think of.

I saw a clip from Metal Wolf Chaos with some villain talking like a TV shop channel salesperson. "HEY, YOU'RE GOING TO DIE, AND ONLY FOR $19.99! THAT'S A FIFTY DOLLAR VALUE!" Supreme voice acting.
As long as I can import iteration upon iteration of mahjong, horse racing, and dating / hentai games, Japan will always be the crown jewel of game development in my eyes.
Aren't Japanese-made games going through a crisis in quality these days?
No?
Unless your counting the Wii. Which isn't fair to the other gaming consoles.
Not even the Wii.
What? I was implying that using the Wii as a sample for bad games being made for the other two consoles wouldn't be accurate. Wii tends to get more shovelware due to being more popular.
Edit: Also because there are a lot of bad japanese games doesnt mean there's a crisis in quality. It means a lot of shitty devs are making bad games, it always happens.
It's like arguing that american games are in a crisis because Ubisoft releases several million Imagine games.
I don't think this topic is necessarily that meaningless. Games from Japan tend to be different. It's not bad to like things which are different. People who say they like games from Japan and want to evangelize the games from Japan they like aren't really saying "when considering a game I care first if it's from Japan, THEN if it's fun." The world is not that black and white. Mean people shouldn't try to paint it like it is.

I have Ouendan 1 and 2, Jump Ultimate Stars, and Nodame Cantabile (all for DS). I don't regret buying any of these games.
You sir, have good taste. Is Nodame Cantabile any good? And could I play it not knowing japanese?
I don't know a lick of Japanese and was fine. I have yet to figure out if there is a way to just go and play whatever song you want after you beat it. I don't think there is a scoring system either (like Ouendan/EBA). Still a fun game overall. There are even some other levels in there that don't deal with the rhythm game theme. One of theme took me a second to figure out what to do, but after I did I facepalmed and beat it.
Definitely worth a purchase. I think it is like $15-20 online.
I am always on the lookout for good DS games to import that don't require much or any Japanese language knowledge.

If we weren't that far in time I would have recommended Rhythm Tengoku Gold, but it seems that it's going to come to the USA. Oh well, I can still recommend the GBA version, Rhythm Tengoku.
Oh, also, Daigasso! Band Brothers DX as well as Taiko no Tatsujin DS.

Thanks, I'll definately give it a look.
Edit: I'd still recommend Rhythm Tengoku Gold. If its American counter part is anything like Elite Beat Agents it'll have completely different songs.
Edit2: I was being stupid I'm thinking of the wrong game. Daigasso Band Brothers I think.

I actually just found out about that game because of Kotaku. And yea, it is a little too late with it coming out this year over here. Heh.
I agree, most any Japanese game good enough to stand out in its already crowded domestic market and make it all the way across the sea to our eyes/ears/internets generally does have redeemable qualities.

I think this debate is the same as the "Consoles vs. PC" one. I like Japanese games in the same way that I like console games, but I don't make a conscious choice to like one or the other. It's just a preference for the kind of games that tend to come from them.
Personally, I'm only really miffed that there hasn't been a 2D Tales game released in the US by Namco since Eternia (Phantasia GBA was localized by Nintendo, I believe).

You guys might be missing the point, depending on the OP's intentions.
He is basically saying that he likes all japanese games and dislikes all american games, giving no reasons why.
Might be poorly worded, though. However, if I'm right, this is about the most willfully ignorant attitude I've seen in a while.
Sounds to me as if he's saying he's a fan of the games that don't get localized because Japanese games are released in the US all the time. It would make no sense to say he doesn't like games released in America.

I interpreted it as him saying he only likes games developed in Japan.

That is all.
This is going to end up being the most informative, productive post of this thread.
So uh, Japanese games. What exactly about the Japan-only games turns you on, Cpt Scrambles?

No no. Japanese market is dead. As is the PC. And RTSes. And RPGs. And FPSes. And Sims. And platformers. And... uh... what else is always dead?
Fucking casual gamers!
