RPGs are a mediocre way to tell stories in games anyways, and a bad way of telling stories in general. Who cares who makes the tallest midgets?
Shut up.
This thread is dumb.
The "Metal Gear?!" syndrome is a side-effect of translation. In Japanese, it's normal to restate a few words of what someone just said to ask for more information of just confirm you understood. The same thing sounds ridiculous to English speakers. I don't know if some Japanese developers do this already, but when localizing games, they need to allow the translation team the freedom to remove/shorten portions of the dialogue. Otherwise we get really unnatural, cumbersome speech.
As for the animation thing, if I understand what you're getting at, Nintendo games (except, oddly, Zelda: Twilight Princess) seem to be immune to this.
I'm glad you agree with me.
As for the animation...hold on, I remember the Resident Evil 4 Let's Play had a great screencap of Ashley doing it. Lemme search. Eureka!

Also, a lot of them still have an overabundance of teenager protagonists, which makes the games not appeal to me now that I'm older.
Capcom is pretty cool.
Policenauts.
IM SICK OF WORLD WAR 2
And any rpg's we get are shitty medieval era games where the story is so boring that you want to kill everyone in the game.
And the only good fighters for the 360 are
Burst Limit
DOA 4
Battle Fantasia
AND THATS IT.
Im just saying why dont these games get released in america OR AT LEAST AS REGION FREE DISCS!!!
You hear me, Capcom!? DEAD.

That was pretty good trolling, though.
Sorry I didn't assume the worst at first.
Still...
Policenauts?
What is that?
Hey bro why don't you list some of these games that need to be released in America instead of, you know, being general and vague as hell.
Otherwise you are a troll and need to crawl back under your bridge.
Well I guess you'd better play Fallout then. Or Half Life. Or Left 4 Dead.
Steam - Minty D. Vision!
Origin/BF3 - MintyDVision
Lol wut. How many JRPG's are based in generic fantasy lands again?
Also fuck Fallout. Arcanum, man. That's the shiznit.
BUT THOSE WEREN'T MADE IN GLORIOUS NIPPON WHY WOULD ONE WASTE HONORABLE TIME WITH WIDE-EYE GAME????
SCRABMLES-CHAN IS WISE BEYOND YEARS.
I would not mind a more measured discussion of the genre in an appropriate thread, though. Of course, every time we have this argument it seems to degenerate into this sort of shitstorm...
I think it's an adventure game made by Kojima? Not too sure.
Yeah, sort of a graphical adventure game with lots of text. It's related vaguely to Snatcher, which was awesome and if you haven't heard of it you should go play it now.
I'm always in favor of killing God (or the church).
What about breaking the heart of God?
I'm sorry God, it just isn't working out!
... no seriously, what?
I LOVE that aspect of those games.
LOVE IT.
I'm not religious.
The problem, of course, is that it's done well maybe 1% of the time. In fact, I'm...kind of having a hard time thinking of such a scenario.

Eat Doug Tennapel
Breath of Fire 3 does it REALLY damn well. Very good buildup too.
This is why Final Fantasy Legend is probably the best JRPG ever.
(ending spoilers)
Then God congratulates you on beating his game by being the first to make it to the top. Then upon meeting God, and finding out that you just participated in some grand experiment to teach man about courage you are completely disgusted. God offers you a wish, and you tell him no, you didn't want to be a pawn in his Creation, so then you kill Him.
Damn, that's just what I was reminiscing about.
I liked the way FFT involved god, a little I guess, I forget how much, but didn't make it the focal point.
Xenogears had a lot of god stuff, but it wasn't as well done, and was very confusing. The story flowed poorly in that respect.
Shit.
That'd be pretty hard to do. Creating a story about nothing.
Well, there's always Seinfeld.

Instead of being the forces that be that are beyond man's control that man must learn to cope with, it seems that when the JRPG designer is thinking about it their thought process is like this:
We need a really really badass thing for people to fight. What's really badass?
Demons? Dragons? Ninjas?
No, they're probably killed like a hundred of those things in this game. What's more badass than that?
God? Yeah, lets have them fight God. He's at least level 50.
I want a JRPG where the god you fight is Azathoth and as soon as you cross dimensions into his infinite court of madness your character falls shrieking to the ground before his mind implodes and he dances eternally as one of its jesters.
