Really, if there is a difference between the quality of Western and Japanese game writing, it's not enough to quibble about. I think we can all agree that the "Most are bad, some are good" paradigm applies to both.

RPGs are a mediocre way to tell stories in games anyways, and a bad way of telling stories in general. Who cares who makes the tallest midgets?

I find that character movement in Japanese games all seems to feel similar in some basic way. It's most noticeable when executing over-the-top poses and whatnot, but there seems to be a few subtler movement archetypes that have nothing to do with mo-cap awkwardness.

I guess it could have roots in their theater, but I really know nothing about Japanese acting tradition.

That's fairly off topic, I guess.
The "timid pure-hearted maiden clutches her hand to her chest" one is basically the worst thing ever and Japanese games NEED to stop doing it. Other things that suck: Repeating what was just said in the form of a question ("METAL GEAR!?")

The "Metal Gear?!" syndrome is a side-effect of translation. In Japanese, it's normal to restate a few words of what someone just said to ask for more information of just confirm you understood. The same thing sounds ridiculous to English speakers. I don't know if some Japanese developers do this already, but when localizing games, they need to allow the translation team the freedom to remove/shorten portions of the dialogue. Otherwise we get really unnatural, cumbersome speech.

As for the animation thing, if I understand what you're getting at, Nintendo games (except, oddly, Zelda: Twilight Princess) seem to be immune to this.

Star Ocean 3 did it in almost EVERY SCENE after every line  it was ridiculous. ("If you go to the mine, you can destroy the monster." "I can destroy the monster if I go to the mine?" "Yes, at the mine, you will be able to destroy the monster." over and over again)

As for the animation...hold on, I remember the Resident Evil 4 Let's Play had a great screencap of Ashley doing it. Lemme search. Eureka!

Once JRPGs were able to get more realistic character depiction and full cutscenes during the PSOne generation, I mostly stopped playing them because I hate the character design and voicework in most anime.

Also, a lot of them still have an overabundance of teenager protagonists, which makes the games not appeal to me now that I'm older.

And any rpg's we get are shitty medieval era games where the story is so boring that you want to kill everyone in the game.

And the only good fighters for the 360 are

    Burst Limit
    DOA 4
    Battle Fantasia

    AND THATS IT.

Im just saying why dont these games get released in america OR AT LEAST AS REGION FREE DISCS!!!

I've encountered plenty of people who do, actually, share Faffel's feelings regarding the JRPG genre. I am one of them. But I agree that this has gotten pretty ridiculous and unproductive, especially the way the argument is being carried out.

I would not mind a more measured discussion of the genre in an appropriate thread, though. Of course, every time we have this argument it seems to degenerate into this sort of shitstorm...

It's okay when it's done well.

The problem, of course, is that it's done well maybe 1% of the time. In fact, I'm...kind of having a hard time thinking of such a scenario.

This is why Final Fantasy Legend is probably the best JRPG ever.

    (ending spoilers)
You get to the top floor, and although nobody's been leading up to it at all with any kind of plot that would suggest it, and you meet the Creator in all His glory, donning what I like to think of as a top hat and a tuxedo, though your opinion might vary since it's like 8x14 pixels.

Then God congratulates you on beating his game by being the first to make it to the top. Then upon meeting God, and finding out that you just participated in some grand experiment to teach man about courage you are completely disgusted. God offers you a wish, and you tell him no, you didn't want to be a pawn in his Creation, so then you kill Him.

Damn, that's just what I was reminiscing about.

I liked the way FFT involved god, a little I guess, I forget how much, but didn't make it the focal point.

Xenogears had a lot of god stuff, but it wasn't as well done, and was very confusing. The story flowed poorly in that respect.

Ah! Yes, Breath of Fire 3 was good. I liked Breath of Fire 2's take on it to (at the time, now it's just as much a cliche, hi FFX ) where 99% of the church members just genuinely believed in the God they were presented with and were just good, honest people with no clue they were secretly worshiping some Evil Death God.

I think they almost always fail to use gods right in JRPGs; it seems they tend to miss their literary significance.

Instead of being the forces that be that are beyond man's control that man must learn to cope with, it seems that when the JRPG designer is thinking about it their thought process is like this:

We need a really really badass thing for people to fight. What's really badass?

    Demons? Dragons? Ninjas?

No, they're probably killed like a hundred of those things in this game. What's more badass than that?

God? Yeah, lets have them fight God. He's at least level 50.
