The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I've been trying out various styles of character design recently, mostly because of the ungoing construction of my University Application portfolio. admittedly most of these designs have been horrid and hard to work with, etc. But this one actually worked in my eyes, but given that anything I do that I actually like is most often terrible, I'm putting it forward to see just how aswful it actually is. Tell me what you think
I'm new here so I'm not entirely sure if this is in violation of the rules or not. And if it is I offer my apologies and feel free to ban/delete me

And with the art linked like that rather than being posted directly in the thread, it can very easily be taken as sitewhoring. :P
yeah but I dunno how to post it directly on the thread so I did the next best thing which is to link to it. but if i get banned because of it then so be it
It's simple but it works. Do more in the same style as the one you posted and add a little more each time until you really feel confident, that's the best way to start, by defining your own personal style. It's also good to look at other artist's work and take pieces from their own styles to add to your own.

I was originally going to make stuff in a mix of the style I've got shown in OP and anime-ish stuff, but I figured if I started with that I'd be biting off more than I could chew. I've been using that basic template layout for all my half-assed unfinished animation on Flash but I've only ever just had a few of them block filled in with different colours, I've never actually gone into any sort of detail at all. Glad to find out it works, here I was thinking it would turn out abysmal
You should try sketching a lot, you'll find the more playing around you do with pencil on paper the more you'll get used to different shapes and curves and you'll find that this 'feel' is what you need to progress. By the looks of things you're more into CG art, but with that said, it is essential you do not neglect traditional mediums as a place to start.
This small sample of your work clearly exemplifies an extent to which you know what you're doing and I can tell you know what you want, so just get yourself a pad and some pencils and go to town on that bad boy.
Me thinks I should get one of those graphic tablets. Cause atm I'm just using the mouse to draw and it can be ridiculously clumsy at times. If i get a graphic tablet I can refine the drawing a bit, which, lets be honest, is always good

A tablet doesn't help you draw better. It's just a fancy pencil.
Yeah but i'm more accurate and precise when it comes to drawing stuff if I use a pencil as opposed to using a mouse, so I think it'll still give me some advantage
So, why do you draw your University Portfolio with a mouse if you're better with a pencil?
Because, rather surprisingly, computer animation doesn't really work unless you have a mouse. and I haven't gotten round to ever buying or even looking into graphic tablets until recently

The best way to be sure is to read them, and then ask a mod by PM (the list is at the bottom of the forum) if some point isn't clear.

more precise
i would never use a tablet for that.
now if you're doing flash, then yeah... i can see you wanting a tablet.
