My old cat started meowing

Hello!

My cat is about 14 years old, he's still is healthy, go outside, run after thing, etc. He learned how to meow at about 8 years old because my ex-boyfriend taught him (basically he was alway meowing at the cat who got tired and learned how to respond) but he didn't do it every often, just when he'd get stuck somewhere with a door closed or if he wanted to go outside. Recently (since last week in fact) he started meowing for no apparent reason. he don't scratch to enter, he just go MEOW. and it's his last resort meow, really loud one.

Right now I have two possibility:
#1 He's hungry (I alway make sure that his bowl is full, but my parents don't because they say he puke. he doesn't do anymore.) because I haven't been home a lot.

#2 He's getting deaf (that would explain the meowing really loud) I read that on a forum while checking what could cause sudden meowing

he's sleeping right now so I haven't been able to test his hearing. But if it does look like he is losing his hearing, is there anything I can do?

He may just want attention, and he gets it if he meows.

It's possible he just changed his behavior for no especially worrisome reason. Cats can change quite a bit over the years, and learn new methods of getting what they want.

It could be a lot of things.

Maybe take the cat to a vet for a checkup?

    Never a bad answer.

I'll check to see when is the next appointment, but since he seems just fine I won't be doing any urgent appointment. He respond to noise like always so he is not getting deaf. I think Thylacine is right and he just decided all of a sudden to be an attention whore. I can give attention so everything should be fine!

Woo :) glad to hear he seems to be doing fine.

I have one cat who meows every time I look at her. Sometimes I will get in the shower and move the curtain back and forth and she will meow whenever she sees me. The other one meows if the food or water dish is empty, or if I have some kind of food and she wants it.

I can understand your concern about the change though. I got worried when the talkative one wouldn't meow for a couple of days. I think she may have had a kitty cold though.

More than likely your cat has just learned if it makes a lot of noise then you come do something it likes.

My cat did the same thing, and she's deaf. She managed a squeak one day and got such a response that she hasn't shut up since.

I'm betting it's just for attention. Keep in mind that your response will determine how this behavior evolves. I have a friend whose cat will loudly and persistently bitch until he's given tuna, since someone in the family always caves to get him to shut up. It's a self-perpetuating issue.

Haha that made me smile. I imagine your cat being Ace Ventura.
