So, a little while ago I started up my computer and was welcomed with this:
Disk Read Error Occured:
Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart
This, however, just prompts a loop, nothing changes no matter how many times I restart. I opened up my case and tried reconnecting the IDE cables to my drives, started it back up, expecting nothing...and it worked. About a week later, however, I turned it off, then this happened again. I tried opening it up and doing the same thing, but it didn't work this time. I noticed that the center of one of my cables is split, but I've been told some cables come like that. I replaced another of my cables but nothing happened.
I am understanding that you have multiple hard drives?
What are the drives? Make/Model?
Where does this error occur?
Your drive might be fucking up, given the way it fixed itself once before. You can probably download some tools from the manufacturer to troubleshoot the drive.
I've heard it associated with a fucked up XP install. I assume you would have mentioned any major changes to your OS load if you had made any, yes?
This error occurs on start-up, it attempts to boot and gets here.
I haven't made any changes to the OS.
Occassionaly (meaning, 5 minutes before I posted this) f8 will bring me to the windows advanced options, not always though, and this time I attempted to start in last known good config. I received this message:
Windows could nto start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\Systems32\Config\System
Now I coul use my windows set-up key to try and repair this, but of course, I bought this PC pre-made, and received no such disc.
You are the proud owner of a failing hard drive. If it's under warranty (check with computer mfr and hd mfr) you can get a free replacement (but lose data). Either way chances are you're screwed out of using that drive anymore.

Unsure of make/model.

Hope this narrows it down,
Thank you.
