After a failure on the part of the search engine (Search does not accept "Lan" due to being three letters) and trawling through 15 pages of threads I haven't dug up anything of much use so I'm starting a thread.
My circle of friends and I run Lans semi-regularly, and our gaming selection is a little limited. Our only real Stickers are Counter strike, and DOTA. With the occasional match of UT2004, Left 4 Dead, And random warcraft mods.
We use to play a reasonable amount of Dawn of War, but due to huge skill differences most of us would rather not play much in the way of RTS.
With that in mind and remembering that our systems are general not graphical power houses (More middle of the line really) What sort of games could we bring to the table to change things up a bit?
The ship.
We always have a riot playing this over LAN.
S-Starwind on
XBLive GamerTag - II The Starwind (Playing - Halo 4, Dungeon Defeners) PSN ID - S-Starwind (Playing Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, Gundam Battle Ops) Final Fantasy XIV - Masamune Server (Moving to Sargantanas) - Rykosho Hoshikaze Steam ID - The Starwind
Really awesome game. It's basically a tactical police sim in which your squad of 5 is called in to "bring order to chaos". Before each stage you choose what equipment you want going in, and your objective is to put into custody (or neutralise if necessary) all suspects, and protect all civilians where possible.
It's not like your standard FPS, here the emphasis is on going slow and following procedure. Even one person deciding to go Rambo can easily get the entire team killed. The game really emphasises teamwork.
Up to five player co-op (ten if you get the expansion pack), so it's pretty ideal for small groups. There's a demo if you want to try it.
The command & conquer games are awesome on a lan, especially on giant maps and at least 4 players. When I used to play Red Alert 2 on lans i'd defend for the start primarily however i'm the type of person who would build up a giant army of prism tanks or harriers etc and send them en masse to my chosen enemy.. totally overwhelming him.
EDIT: Also, you can edit the older games ini files to run natively at your resolution of choice thereby supporting widescreen res' etc. Like running C&C Red Alert 2 at 1680x1050...

He said they'd rather not have RTS games. Which is sad because C&C is just plain awesome for lan.
I know you mentioned that RTS are probably out due to skill differences, but you should give any of the Total War series a go on multiplayer. For me it required completely different tactics so it should level the playing field.
Also each game should be relatively short, so if you find it less than pleasing then you won't have lost much game time.
If everyone can run it, Battlefield 2 is a blast after you've played the hell out of Battlefield 1942. Playing with the physics, vehicles, and plenty of explosives is enough to keep you guys entertained for hours guaranteed.
Carmageddon 2, get a bunch of custom cars (such as the Turtle Van and the Batmobile) and load up a nice big map like the Airport. This one can be tricky getting to run on everyone's computers simply because it's so old and might require plenty of effort to get working.
Half-life 2 : Synergy - Co-op (Does at least 4 people, can't remember how high it goes) lets you play through Half-life 2 , EP1 and EP2 (you need to have the originals though)
Smash Ball - Only in beta and I haven't tried it but looks like it'd be good fun
Half-Life 1: Action HL - Awesome fun DM/Team DM but with "realistic" weapons and access to stunt dives/moves
Sven Co-op - Another Co-Op game but heaps of fun and shitloads of custom campaigns available for it
Science & Industry - Played this one heaps back in the days, it's kinda like CTF, but instead of flags you have scientists, the more scientists you have the more cash you get and the quicker you get to vote/get new upgrades
I'd recommend the Original R6Vegas over 2 as you can play 4 player-coop through the story missions whereas the sequel only has 2 player co-op or Terrorist Hunt. R6V:2 is a great 2player cooperative game though, as are gears of war and red alert 3?
You could try Ghost Recon: Advance Warfighter, I liked the original Ghost Recon played with friends, but we didn't have much luck with Advanced Warfighter (might have been 2 though, but it's supposed to have a co-op campaign I think).
SWAT 4 is a great suggestion, nothing like a bit of police brutality to get a lan started.
GTA IV multiplayer is supposed to be a blast, but it depends on what you mean middle of the road since last time I checked the roads been turned into a superhighway lately, but it runs on my laptop.
Alien Swarm - Ut2004 mod, top down shooter.
Guild Wars - It's an MMO but no monthly fee and it's damn cheap now, in fact most MMOs will offer some sort of free trial that are probably worth taking up now and again because the first couple of days are usually when the most fun is to be had.
10 minute games Golf? - Yeah, multiplayer golf sounds a bit odd but it kinda works.
edit: also, the trick to enjoyable RTS games is to basically get one that no-one has played, so nobody has any advantage. There's a bunch of really cheap ones out there that most people won't have picked up. Empire Earth 3, Universe at War, Perimeter, World in Conflict (bit of an oddball that one), Battle for Middle Earth etc.
You could try Ghost Recon: Advance Warfighter, I like the original Ghost Recon played with friends, but we didn't have much like with Advanced Warfighter (might have been 2)
Listen to Rook, for he is wise. Ghost Recon co-op is an amazing experience.
Battlefield 2 LAN against tons and tons of bots never gets old. Search for Folke's Unlocks (or something like that). It unlocks all weapons for each class, including the booster packs (even if you don't own them).

System Shock 2
Any of the Rainbow Six series - 3 was always my favorite.
Mechwarrior 4 Mercs + addons is a great time if your friends like great times.
Savage 2 is free now, great RTS/FPS combo, so your good RTS players can be commanders, the rest of you shoot each other.
Titan Quest incase your burned out on Diablo 2.
Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 is fun in co-op or DM.
You could try Ghost Recon: Advance Warfighter, I liked the original Ghost Recon played with friends, but we didn't have much luck with Advanced Warfighter (might have been 2 though, but it's supposed to have a co-op campaign I think).

We played this game FAR too much. Simple but compulsive.
It's basically the ultimate form of "Chicken", whoever turns first in a head-on usually loses.
thread needs more soldat, this is a no brainer
Listen to Rook, for he is wise. Ghost Recon co-op is an amazing experience.
Alien vs. Predator 2
Splinter Cell 3/4
Call of Duty 4 I think 5 has co-op campaign.
Team Fortress 2
Titan Quest
