The Softening of Fabrics

Recently, in an attempt to save money and energy we're hanging most of our laundry to dry. Because I've never before used fabric softener the results have been less then pleasing. Trying to peel open a t-shirt so you can put it on is very strange.

So I've decided, for the first time in my life, to give liquid fabric softeners a go.

The problem is my machine doesn't have a place to put it. This means (correct me if I'm wrong) that I need to add it after the initial wash drain and spin. During the rinse.

This, obviously troubles me greatly and I'm looking towards the "Downy Ball" that claims to eliminate this step by opening on it's own during the spin cycle.

Does this work?
Are there any other solutions that work better?
