WASHINGTON — Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi prevailed by one vote today in his bid to clinch the No. 2 spot in next year’s Senate GOP leadership.
Lott beat Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee for the job of minority whip by a vote of 25-24, according to his press secretary, Susan Irby. The vote marked an impressive comeback for the Mississippi lawmaker who fell out of favor with his party four years ago after making remarks viewed as racially insensitive.
Lott said he was "exhilarated" to be back in the ranks of Republican leadership. His new post will involve counseling Senate Republican leader Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky on strategy, counting votes and pressuring undecided GOP senators to vote with leadership. The post is a particularly important one for Republicans because next year the Senate will be split 51-49 in favor of Democrats.
“Now I can do a job that I really love the most — count the votes,†Lott said.
I was reading his wiki, and he is a moderate on immigration issues. This anti-immigrant site gives him a C ranking. He also supports affirmative action and stem cell research. This could be read as an appeal to the center and moderates, rather than ????

He fell from favor with the GOP for being racist. I think moderates like sensible people.

Thanks for that, Australia. Maybe there are more factors at play in this part of American life, culture or history than you realize.
I think he's right, I live in America.
I wouldn't say it's fucking stupid, I'd say that it does nothing to solve the problem of racism in this country and that it creates a situation that allows for complacency with the status quo to thrive.
You're from MI aren't you Irond? We just got rid of it here. If you throw all the "Woo no more racism!" crap that got thrown out with Prop. 2's passage I think you'll still see at least one positive result.
There is no more safety net for white people to fall back on.
The massive problems with the Detroit Public School system now can't be written off by whites who say "Well they have AA, so who cares." Now we need to actually work on the problem of racism and the poverty/lack of opportunity that exists in our state.
AA allowed people of color and women who didn't have access to opportunity to have that access. It did nothing to solve the question of why they weren't getting access in the first place. Furthermore, I think it allowed for those very problems to be swept under the rug instead of addressing them head on.

I'm glad it's gone.

I'm in Massachusetts. I heard about the Michigan ruling. I'm not certain that I'm 100% behind all aspects of Affirmative Action, but from a demographic point of view, we have black Americans making half the income of white Americans. I think pretty much everyone can agree that this is a result of historical injustices, and it doesn't appear that this gap is repairing itself absent government policies.
I do think the government has a responsibility to try to redress this kind of society-wide disparity, both because of principle, but also because it has larger implications to the forward functioning of our country.
Now, Affirmative Action might not be the best way to redress this disparity - I'm not quite certain what would be, precisely. But I think a blase dismissal of "AA is stupid" absent any other analysis is ignorant.

Uh--- wait
Yeah, that isn't ominous at all. What's that saying about those who seek power?
That he's the minority whip and his job is to line up senate votes?
Exactly! Shit, wait...
I'm actually more concerned with this as an indication that the party platform for the next two years is going to be "We're obstructing Democrats! And also justice!"

I would recommend not debating affirmative action outside of an envrironment where you are sure people of color are part of the conversation.
First of all I don't understand what you just said, and second of all I would, will, and do discuss the merits of political ideas to any and everyone, and this includes Affirmative Action.

I'm sot sure how this scans. Are you saying we should or shouldn't include everyone in discussions of AA?
Should. You can still discuss it in homogenous or unknown groups, but it probably won't be as good of a discussion outside of a mixed group, and might even be unhelpful to those involved. If you want to talk about it go ahead, but I would like to preface the debate by stating that it's flawed.

The only reason Trent Lott came out in favor of affirmative action was to attempt to deflect the criticism about his tacit endorsement of racism. Who gives a shit?
He may or may not be a racist himself, but he certainly has no problem exploiting the racism of his constituents to get votes, which makes him a douchebag.
All right, I apologize. Your sentence is confusing as hell.
My sarcasm still stands. :P
It's just that I lived in Cincinnati most of my life, and I don't know about other places, but there a lot of things get said that wouldn't get said if the people saying them were sure they were in a mixed group. And also, white people say a lot of racist stuff on their own as verbal diarrhea without intending to, case in point Trent Lott.

Trent Lott's racism was not off-the-cuff. It was carefully calculated to woo racist voters.
I actually think that discussion of sensitive topics is often better in the relative anonymity of the internets. Assuming a fairly broad forum like this one, no one's quite certain of the political or ethnic orientation of their audience, and it's less likey to devolve into a back-slapping session. It also allows for people to express stupid opinions with the only retaliation being a verbal beatdown.

Seriously, though, I'd comment, but I'd rather not derail this thread from it's true point: lambasting Trent Lott for being a (possibly racist) douche and the Republicans for continuing to give this guy credibility with leadership positions.

Thurmond was a fucking horrible racist calling for the continued segregation of the south.

That, or they're choosing someone who knows what he's doing despite being an asshole.
My dad knows Mr. Lott. I have to deal with that sorry excuse for a human being from time to time.
That they're incredibly boring?

Well, it worked in 98...
Didn't they lose a fair number of seats in '98?
By the way, has anyone made the "minority whip Lott/Lott used to whipping minorities" joke yet?
Which really is an unfortunate title given his past comments.
