Making a claim against cell phone warranty/insurance

The provider is AT&T. The family plan, that the cell is part of, was purchased at Costco. The phone is a Sony Ericsson W580i .

My little sister dropped her cell phone and it fell into some water. I am not sure, but I think the phone is covered by insurance.

My question is: what method should she use to get the cell phone replaced? Claim that it was stolen and ask for a replacement or come straight out with it and explain that it fell in the water? From what I understand, some policies/companies will not cover water damage to cell phones.

    That would be fraud.

Warranties generally don't cover water damage, because the warranty is mean to cover the phone breaking down, not someone damaging it. If it's insured it probably has some kind of accidental damage provision.

Insurance companies employ people whose entire job is to catch people doing what you propose. And they are very good at their jobs.

They cover liquid damage. Tell them it was liquid damage. You're fine. As long as you've been paying for insurance coverage anyway. Otherwise just buy a new phone and throw the SIM into it.

Jaef is correct. As long as you have the insurance policy you should be fine. I've never had my cell insurance company give me trouble at all. They're actually pretty helpful usually.

I work for that INS. If you pay the 4.99 premium on that line you are covered. Just call 1-888-562-8662. Don't call me though, ugh.
