The SNL Post: I'm Gonna Have Sex With Your Wife

So I will watch SNL good or bad. Some sketches people are clearly trying but Fred Armisen, oh Fred Armisen, he is like failure personified. And this worst thing is how confident he clearly is about his stupid shitty sketches. The only thing he's remotely good at is being Prince.

At least the new chick is mega hot. But the rest of the cast is pretty decent. I really dig Bill Hader and Jason Sudeikis.

Share your thoughts on awesomeness or aggravatingness. Also, if anyone says it totally sucks worse then it ever has, that's not true. This past couple years have been much better than 3-5 years ago.

I knew Armisen was trouble the second I heard "I'M JUST KEEDIINNNNNNG!"

I like Fred Armisen, but he does more bad than good.

I think Keenan Thompson is under-used. I may be biased because I grew up watching All That and Keenan and Kel, but he has some great characters on SNL.

It's sucked since the early 90's when everybody good either left or died.

I'm surprised Kenan's the only All That alumni to make his way to SNL. I'd have thought Amanda Bynes would have gone that path, Josh Server was around forever; amazing he hasn't gotten the callup.

I watch every new episode the day after on DVR, and can chop through it in 20-40 minutes depending how good it is. I automatically skip their recurring characters because they're guaranteed to suck.

The only exception was when Hugh Laurie hosted; he must have had a hand in writing it because it was much funnier than usual and some sketches had an atypical layout.

Well I do like Kristen Wiig, so I won't argue with that point. "Suck" may have been an inaccurate word, but I assumed that tlaking about a comedy show the comedy was the only relevant bit. Next time I'll be sure to specify "Unfunny" for you. :)

The problem with pretty much every single recurring character, good or bad, is extreme overuse. If they spaced out a certain character's appearances, and only had them in a sketch occasionally, it wouldn't be nearly as bad. Also, it would be great if they actually bothered writing more than one sketch for recurring characters rather than just madlibbing the same one over and over, with nothing changed save for the guest star and a few nouns.

There have been some interesting sketch ideas this year that I've liked. My favorite sketch of the year was the Of Mice and Men thing they did where Lenny was actually bright but easily misled. I also approved of the idea and some of the execution of tonight's Whole New World 10 years later rip off. It's not entirely worthless now. Just like, 80% of the sketches.

Problem is, you don't know in advance what's going to get over. And you don't know for how long it'll get over. Nobody probably expected jack shit to come out of Debbie Downer, and then that turned out to be the one skit in which the usually rock-faced Rachel Dratch cracks, and then she takes everyone else with her, and the concept of everyone cracking at once in a skit called 'Debbie Downer' got so many laughs that they pretty much HAD to bring it back.

And then Rachel holds it together for skits 2, the intended concept is exposed for the weaksauce it was, and it dies soon after.

Thing is, a lot of SNL skits, there's really no place you can GO with a lot of them besides the original skit. By skit 7 or 8, Mad Libbing previous incarnations is all you've got left.

Certain hosts do make it better. Hugh Laurie's was good. Ashton Kutcher's was also good. Ashton's was very oldschool SNL style.

What I hate most about their recent ones is you're not allowed to laugh by yourself, they have to drive home their 'message' throughout the entire fucking skit. Like the old skit with Murray and I think Steve Martin, where they're looking at the camera and going "What is that thing?". That skit was hilarious and it only had two guys standing in front of a black backdrop.

Tonights opening skit was patently unfunny. There were so many things they could have done with Dick Cheney and George Bush and their exit interviews and they just wasted the opportunities.

What I don't understand is SNL is supposed to be the bigtime, the professional championship of sketch comedy if you will, and they bomb so frequently. It's almost amazing, how you could have such a mediocre program based on what should be some of the top sketch performers and comedy writers.

According to David Spade, a lot of the 'young' guys were expelled because the suits (all like, 70 year olds) didn't find it "funny" anymore, and hold a lot of sway over the writing. So now it's all safe, boring comedy.

Also, the writers probably sucked before, but you don't have actors that can save bad writing anymore.
