So I'm apparently not getting 5.1 from my 360 through the optical input designated for minidisc ("MD/CDR"). I used to have my 360 plugged into the DVD input, but then I got my PS3 and had to shuffle things around. The receiver has three optical inputs - MD, DVD, and digital cable. It also has digital co-ax, but I have nothing that outputs over digital co-ax.
Anyway, I get 5.1 if I use any other optical input, so it's definitely an issue with that specific input and not the 360 or the cable. Now I need to figure out why. Three possible culprits:
- The input is screwed up. This seems unlikely, as the audio is seemingly being downconverted from 5.1 to 2.0. It doesn't seem like I'm actually missing any information, it's just being incorrectly processed.
- Some setting got tweaked, telling the receiver to process the MD input as DD2.0. Very possible, since I have a toddler who loves to press buttons, but the manual didn't suggest what button might have done this. Then again, it's a shitty manual.
- The MD input is not designed to process 5.1 signals, and automatically downconverts to 2.0. I know dick about minidisc, so this is very possible.
So, anybody have any insight here? If the last one is the culprit, then I just have to decide which source I'd like to have downconverted to 2.0 audio (probably the cable box). Otherwise, I get to fiddle with settings until something works.

Optical > coax converters are not terribly expensive, that may be the best solution.
