So it's about that time. Tax time.
I always get mine done asap, and was pleasantly surprised after just finishing them. I bought a house last year and I got to write off the interest and the points I paid. So, now the honeymoon is paid for. :)

Anyone else got an early jump on their taxes?

Last year I had three of them, from two different states.

    That was very lame.

Now I'm getting one plain vanilla MA return.

I'm on my dad's health insurance and he's in NJ so Aetna doesn't send the form I need for my state taxes here in MA. I have to call and get the info. How that law is still on the books despite being a resounding failure is beyond me.

The multiple states tax filing thing is absolutely a horrible experience all around. Glad I have only had to deal with it once.

Greatest thing this year is that we can use my wife's "Hope" credit. Hello huge refund.

Tax returns were awesome when I was still in the military... no state taxes. I miss those days.
I didn't own my house in 2007, so I have no idea how that fits in; and I've got a bunch of work stuff to write off b/c of the new job. Plus several 1099s. Oh Joy of Joys.

Taxes make me feel dumb. And hungry... You wouldn't like me when I'm hungry.

In MA you can deduct part of your rent and commuting costs. It's one of the few good things we do.

Legally I think they still have to send you a w-2, if not you might have to tell the IRS so they can force them to send you one.

I'm not perfectly certain though, it's been a while.

When you fill out the return it asks and you fill it in. I think it's like half your yearly commuting cost and then there's a break for renting, I'm not sure how much but it's been on every MA online tax return I've ever done.

So I used H&R Block's online thing, paid $14.95 to have last years info automatically filled in because fuck digging up the old printout forms, and the whole process took me about 25 minutes, state and federal. I'm getting $900 back, which is less than last year, but that makes sense since I was working the whole year in '08 and thus my withholding rate was actually accurate.

I did that write-off for rent costs in MA thing, but it caps at $3k and I don't see how it affected me much, my state return was still only $66. :|

I will spend the proceeds on Law School apps and a custom fitted suit because I like to look classy as fuck sometimes.
