I've always bought Trojan Spermicidal, and now I realize I've accidentally purchased Trojan Lubricated instead.. What's the difference? There was no noticeable difference in price. Is it the same condom minus the spermicidal lubricant? Is it less safe as a result? That would be stupid. Could anyone fill me in?
You would have to read the package to know if it's got spermacidal lubrication as opposed to just normal.
Provided it's just straight up lube, then yes, it is less effective, but still reasonably safe. Just make sure you use it as directed. if you are worried, you can always pick up some spermacidale lube of your own to put on.
spermicidal lube is mostly a placebo, in that it doesn't really do anything in such a small quantity, but it makes you feel better.
If you were to happen to "leak" a little bit around the bottom, it might do something to help prevent pregnancy. But if it broke or did something unexpected, it really doesn't make a difference.
I think the main reason they sell condoms with regular lubricant is that some people have allergic reactions to the spermicidal chemical they use. Just thinking about how uncomfortable that would be makes me happy that such people have a choice...
spermicides, specifically nonoxynol-9, can irritate the skin for some people and the irritated skin can become more prone to infections. Its overall effectiveness seems to be debated, but if you do choose to go with them, it's not advised to use spermicidal condoms more than once a day.
