Finding a good, nice, high quality "Starter" Bible

I need help finding a good quality Bible - something large, not necessarily a study Bible, but perhaps a candidate for a "Family" Bible. My girlfriend has a fascination with books and paper and so I want to get her a "tome"-like Bible for Valentine's. She's been mentioning it over and over, seems like she's dropping some pretty heavy hints about it.

Thing is, there's only a handful of Christian stores nearby and they all carry the "study" types, nothing sort of grand, impressive, that can hold memories and such.

Also, she loves the smell of a good old book. I thought about Half-Price books and we looked at The Strand when we were in NYC, but no luck. Are the tomes of yore so easily abandoned?

If you are more interested in presentation than content then check Half Price Book or the like for a King James. It's the least accurate and most biased translation of any commonly used today but it does have the most impressive poetry in English and has been around a long time (so lots of neat old printings).

If you are more interested in content or accuracy then definitely go for The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocrypha, Augmented Third Edition.

Ah - I guess "high quality" could have been interpreted that way. I meant as in presentation - gilded letters and the like.

    Hi,

A good bible, with footnotes and the likes, is sold by the Jehovah Witnesses, it is big, easy to ready, and affordable.

Just glancing around and found a few things. First is an auction site, they have an old bible for sale with the estimated value being between $60-100. http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/6134330

Another place I found had a bunch of nice looking leather bound bibles and apparently you can even have them engraved. http://www.leatherbibles.com/mm5/

One last site I found: http://www.buy.com/prod/deluxe-parish-bible/q/loc/106/30489420.html

I can't vouch for the sites, but I figured I'd throw them out there in case they might help you.

Your best bet is to ask around antique stores for "family" bibles. They usually went up on a centre-piece in old homes for the entire families use. They're big, illustrated, fancy writing included and usually bound with leather and wood.

There are certain sections which are translated to give a different meaning from almost every other Bible translation. Due to these problems, this translation is only used by the Jehovah Witnesses, so I wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for "a Bible". See http://www.towerwatch.com/Witnesses/New_World_Translation/new_world_translation.htm, for example.

If you go this route be careful because the Jehovah Witness bible uses their own translation (NWT) that is generally not accepted by Christians. If you or her don't care about that then it's fine, but I can imagine it being a problem.

    edit: Darn you Papillon :(

Thirded JW bible, its not The Bible. The New Living Translation is a good bible as a starter, but if you just want it for prettiness, it wouldn't really do.

Is there anything you're not amazing at?

just go into any Christian bookstore and tell them youre looking for that type of bible. Usually it will be a non-devotional or youth bible.

oh and chapters/major book chains =/= Christian book store

edit: i just read that you're not getting what you want from the Christian chains.

my other suggestion is to find well-off Catholic Church's. They usually sell what youre looking for. Even ask the parishioner, for a fabric hard-cover Bible. They should direct you to places that have a more beautiful feel to the good book's presence.

Or if its PURELY for aesthetic feel, you can just go with something like this
