Space in my case is kind of tight, so I definitely need SATA ports that face upward like in that board. However, the locations for screws in my case leave a little space between the end of this board and the next spot to screw it in, so it's never been securely fastened. Something that's 12.0 x 9.6 instead would work a lot better I think, or even smaller than the current if possible.
I don't care about SLI. All I care about is 4 slots for ram (DDR2 800 compatible). Motherboards are the part i know the least about, and after getting burned on this one I'm pretty careful about what I get now. Any recommendations?

Very doubtful. I put this thing together back in early 08. Also, I'm unhappy with the board for other reasons (doesn't sit well in the case, has some things located in really bad spots) so I'm not really willing to wait on a long warranty process, especially because my only current computer could go at any moment, leaving me stranded.
I just built a computer using this guy:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128359 (Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R). The board has been stable so far, and I have been using it for 1 month now. I am using Vista Ultimate x64 if that makes any difference.
Works pretty good, has a ton on SATA ports onboard. Even comes with an adapter to do eSATA, if you need that.

Even so, Get a new board, rma the dead one, and sell it when you get it back - free upgrade.

I was considering that board, so it's nice to have a personal opinion from someone. My only concern was how close the PCI-E slot is to the RAM sockets. I have a honkin 8800GT and I'm worried if it'll all fit in there okay.
Also I saw a couple comments from people on Newegg about the board needing a lot more juice than normal. I'm not changing out any of my other components, but I'm only using a 500W Seasonic PSU, do you think I should upgrade that while I'm at it?

This is a good idea, I didn't even think of that. I'll have to check my documentation.
Oh, and one last general question: Anyone have some tips for applying thermal paste? when I installed on my last mobo I just used the included thermal pad. I assume that because I'm moving the CPU I'll need to take that off and apply the paste, which is the only part of the install I really dread.

FYI, all ASUS motherboards bought after November 1st, 1999 have a 3 year warranty.
