So, not that anyone cares, but the impeachment trial for Illinois Governor Blagojevich is underway. They have played FBI types which indicates corruption going on. My BIG question: why are we making such a big deal of this? The rest of our Government does the same shit everyday, and yet the stars align on an unlucky bastard and he (or she) gets media attention- which suddenly makes this an unusual and startling event. I feel Nixon was victim to the same sort of treatment.

Not that I feel government corruption is ever a good event, or anything like that.

I think Nixon was the victim of the same kind of treatment too. Mostly because he broke the law and got caught doing it.

Because measures of accountability in government are largely superficial, whether punitive or regulatory policy. Citizens would have to actually be vigilant of their government to enforce real accountability. Ain't gonna happen. Top Chef is on.

I guarantee if that we bothered to pursue any investigation into our more illustrious politicians we will find some reason to impeach them. It's the selective enforcement of the rules that bothers me.

uh it's a big deal because he's an arrogant douchebag who basically brought the state government to a standstill for four years?

because he knew he was under investigation and still ran his mouth about selling senate seats?

    because he's batshit insane?

It actually wouldn't get as much media attention if Blagojevich wasn't such an arrogant prick

he invoked Ghandi and Martin Luther King Jr. while giving a speech that was supposed to be explaining his actions

he boycotted his own impeachment trial

I'm not talking about being or Illinois. I'm talking about the circus this whole thing has become (and from what I understand, Illinois is pretty bad concerning corrupted officials, which would make this even less of a big deal). Blagodvich (or however it's spelled) being as crazy as he is, granted, makes it that much worse in the spotlight.

Edit: Yes, this Governor should get the book thrown at him. And Name' did catch a flaw in my statement. Similar is a more accurate word.

Also I am pretty sure no one else right now is getting away with shit this egregious, at least not on the scale of a fucking U.S. Senate seat.

I mean fuck even most of the corruption in the Bush administration was mostly out-in-the-open marginally legal but just unethical "Whaddya gonna do about it" kind of shit.

Our privacy is being diminished all the time (usually voluntarily), but that goes for politicians too. It'll be tough to sell Senate seats when anyone can pull up your live Google satellite feed and watch you beat off in your bathroom.

Blagojevich is definitely making it more of a spectacle by being completely insane, but selling a US Senate seat should and would always be a big deal. They are only 100 of the things in the entire country. They're among the most powerful people in the world. It is a big deal. Nothing about the coverage seems out of proportion, except that it is, like almost all modern media coverage, pretty facile.

He caught redhanded within like, how long of Obama giving up the seat? Less than a month? The only news story is that he's not yet out of office.
