So the new Animal Collective album,
Merriweather Post Pavilion came out last Tuesday and it's pretty incredible. Well,
this song is pretty incredible. I haven't actually heard the rest of the album yet since I can't stop listening to this one, but once I've got it out of my system I'm sure I'll enjoy the whole thing.
Why is this so much better than the other shit Animal Collective's done? Because of
pop. Yeah it's still interesting and weird and electronic but goddamnit it's a dude singing about how he wants to go on a walk with a girl and it's got catchy hooks and lovely melodies and chirping birds.
Yes, boys and girls, pop music. No not that Britney's Back shit, I'm talking about the
good shit, including the best of the best:
From
Surfin' Safari to
Pet Sounds and
Smiley Smile -- pretty much anyone who's made pop music since these guys is indebted to them. Lush production, beautiful melody, harmonies like no one else, and plenty of teen angst and bubbly lyrics with a bit of an acid trip thrown in at the end, they had it all.
But pop can be sad too, like this dude who eventually stabbed himself in the chest and died:
Sure his stuff, especially early on, was so personal it bordered on uncomfortable and so melancholy that listening to a whole album at a time can be an emotionally draining experience, but it was pretty as all hell. Personal, evocative, melodic guitar-plucking and lovelorn poetry on
Either/Or gave way to produced, arranged, even orchestral pop on his later albums like
XO, but Elliott Smith always knew how to make beautiful pop music.
And of course the ultimate badge of indie-pop love:
Belle and Sebastian's
If You're Feeling Sinister was heard ad nauseam in many a college sophomore's apartment in the late '90s. These Scottish kids continue to make slightly melancholic chamber pop with the best of 'em, even if hipster kids aren't allowed to like them anymore.
So, what do you listen to when you want to hear boys with high voices sing about the girls they wish they had and flowery pianos and carefully plucked guitars? Fuck that boring folk shit, the amelodic experimental noise, the dirty rock and roll, and that damnable hippity hop.
Think pretty, SE++.

Right. I thought the title made that clear.
Dashboard Confessional
Simple Plan
Get Up Kids
I hope you never have sex
I know, right? It's like they got done exploring, and decided that accessibility isn't so bad after all. It just feels like a much more mature album, and also one that is nearly impossible to stop listening to.
it's absolutely horrible
This album has a lot of great songs on it
Personally, I am a huge fan of If you seek amy, phonography, and circus
Clearly you didn't read the OP or watch High Fidelity and have never gone to pitchfork.com or met a hipster.
Seriously though, I don't think many people really think of "pop" music as literally meaning popular music. I think of it as more of a sound and a style of music than anything. A lighter, prettier, bubblier kind of music. It might appear more superficial at first glance but the best stuff is really just as complex and interesting as anything else out there.
Why are you doing this to me.
indie pop is for people that want to be dicks about music but who can't be bothered to try picking up a guitar

(i love it)
The New Pornographers might be my favorite pop band of all time. Mass Romantic is probably in my top five favorite albums.
It's got a bit more of a rock-and-roll mentality than most, and it's a bit faster and louder but it is still pop at it's heart. I just love how incredibly layered it is, and the way they constantly build and demolish their songs by adding and removing layers, tempo changes, brilliant transitions.
If I could make an album that sounded like Mass Romantic-era New Pornographers I could die happy
atlyung, youtube poster
I don't really agree that this new album is better than all their other stuff, but hey
we can agree that it's excellent for sure
seriously every time I listen to like rockpop
it's always the new pornographers
they're just the best
It seems like something that would have been produced by Van Dyke Parks, which is a pretty high compliment in my book, given that he and Wilson are responsible for Smiley Smile.
it's probably because i'm listening to a bunch of metal before the bomb ass Scion Rock Festival in February
BUT the last indie pope band i listened to was Los Campesinos! and they are excellent
also the new Decemberists single is really awesome and i'm hell of excited for Hazards of Love
That was pretty good actually
it's kind of upsetting
is this what this is
oh I love Sung Tongs and Strawberry Jam and all that good stuff, but something about MPP just feels more complete. I mean, using the same chord for five minutes straight (Purple Bottle, anyone?) and weird, amelodic yelping are interesting choices, and I like those songs, but it's not always exactly easy to listen to, you know?
What I love about MPP is they didn't sacrifice any of that distinctiveness but it's like they got back to the roots of Pop. You can hear echoes of the Beatles and the Beach Boys in it, and it's all so fucking catchy. In retrospect it makes all the rest of their stuff feel like one big buildup to this album.
that is exactly what it is, yes
Not even Marie Digby's, which is overrated and boring if you ask me
