Kaneda is a bike gang leader whose close friend Tetsuo gets involved in a government secret project known as Akira. On his way to save Tetsuo, Kaneda runs into a group of anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader. The confrontation sparks off Tetsuo's supernatural power leading to bloody death, a coup attempt and the final battle in Tokyo Olympiad where Akira's secrets were buried 30 years ago
I just watched this for the first time in years and its unbelievable that the entire thing is done by hand. The bike scenes in the beginning and the end fight scene blow my mind. To think that this same year America was creating such animated classics like "Pound Puppies and the Legend of Big Paw". I don't really like much anime, but this movie out does even modern live action movies.
In the 90s Sony was going to try to make a live action version but it proved to be too costly to fund. Apparently Leonardo DiCaprio's production company is now going to attempt making it, but who knows how that's going to pan out?
I own the Akira comics. They've been reversed so they read left-to-right but all the characters have been turned left-handed.
The movie is great, it's something you can show people who aren't really into teh animes but can still appreciate a good story with great, consistent artwork.
This was also the very first animated movie to be done entirely with digital cell-shading, which is now industry standard. Before that they hand-painted the cells. This looks much cleaner.
I own the special-edition DVD and in the bonus features they show someone painting a background for the movie. There were so many fucking windows and shit and the guy is painstakingly drawing each one. It made me have a real appreciation for those who work in animation and spend days on something that's on screen for about 3 seconds.
Give me weaboos any day. At least I can boss them around and they don't fight back. Assholes always try to be tough and it gets old.
But then they might think you're tsundere for them
brotip: i had to look that up
I refuse to look that up. Is that when tough girls beat the shit out of wimpy dudes in anime and then fall in love and marry them on the 300th episode to end the series?
That chorus that came in near the end whenever Tetsuo was walking around was kinda unsettling
NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I actually bought the soundtrack. The music in the whole movie is just so bizarre and eerie. It's done mostly with these old-school, Japanese, wooden xylophones and choruses.

that's my shit
kaneda don't give a fuck
he's coming to ruin your omnigod ass with his crazy laser cannon
there is some faggot walking around in the mall outside my store with that green and shite stripped hat from bleach
it is hilarious and sad at the same time
Except with Akira I trust the script more than I have trusted any adaptation of this kind of source material before.
KAAAAANNNNEEEEDAAAAAA!
my roommate owns 2 of those
he dresses as that character every chance he gets
Follow me on Twitter??
man shut up akira anime owns
Eh.
End him
TEEEEEETTTTSUUUUOOOOOOOOO
KHAAAAAAAAAANNNN!
why is he still your roommate
if you watch it knowing that they tried to cram about 5 television seasons worth of story into a two-hour movie, you can appreciate it.
But man, that storyline is kinda hard to follow sometimes.
I wonder if they'll keep the almost rape scene in.
End him.

I keep imagining that watching the movie will solidify things for me.
I keep telling myself "this is the weekend I watch Akira" but then I see boobs or it's lunch time or something and I just get sidetracked.

But I have never watched Akira
I should rectify this

I mean is it better to watch the subs or dubs? Or does it not matter
hey satan...: thinkgeek amazon My post |
The movie had a horrible dub in the 80s. It was so nonsensical and did nothing to explain the plot.
When the DVD came out they re-dubbed the English tracks so now it's a lot more accurate to the script.
Of course there's always the purist option of watching it subtitled but the new English dub is actually pretty good.
To watch the dub
or not to watch the dub
that is the question

watch shit how it's intended to be watched, originally
do you watch dubbed foreign movies too?
Fari I don't watch a lot of foreign movies
the last one I watched was Old Boy and I did that shit with subs...but I don't think there is a dub of that anyway
