Fallen Empire: Legions

Fallen Empire: Legions is a game developed by GarageGames. A lot of the members of GarageGames worked on Tribes 1 and 2, and the concept behind Legions is similar. It is a shooter with jetpacks. The controls have been updated a lot, so skiing is smoother, but no less fun. There are 3 game modes: deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the flag. At the moment, there are no vehicles or deployables, leading to a much leaner and less complicated experience. The game is currently in beta stage, and many new features may be added. It is a hell of a lot of fun. What could go wrong with jet packs and explosions?

Gameplay

Fallen Empire: Legions places a lot of emphasis on the ability to move well with the jetpack. This is called skiing. By holding the right mouse button the character becomes frictionless and can move in any direction at a greater speed. By holding the right mouse button and jump the player will shoot upwards. Holding shift and the right mouse button causes the player to speed towards the ground. Using all of these abilities, a player can gain speed traveling up and down hills. This process is called skiing. There is a feature called overdrive. When the player hits a speed of 88 or higher, pressing R causes him to accelerate rapidly and lose no momentum by turning. To compensate, the player loses health by being in overdrive mode. Being able to hit slopes at the right angle allows players to quickly travel across the map, and that is necessary to avoid being blown to bits by good players.

Classes

There are a number of different classes available. Unlike Tribes, you cannot make your own classes, but the provided ones cover pretty much all of the logical options.

Gunner: The is the most basic and well rounded class. He comes equipped with medium armor, a chaingun, a rocket launcher, and a grenade launcher.

Sniper: The sniper comes with a sniper rifle and a grenade launcher. It also has medium armor.

Sniper Specialist:
This class has a more powerful sniper, which can charge faster and do more damage. He also has a chaingun, which makes him weaker at close quarters combat. This class has medium armor as well.

Chaingun Specialist:
The chaingun specialist has medium armor, a rocket launcher, and a chaingun. The chaingun has been upgraded so it has less spread (more accuracy), does not overheat as quickly, and has more bullets.

Rocket Launcher Specialist:
The rocket launcher specialist also has medium armor, a chaingun, and a rocket launcher. The chaingun is the standard version, but the rocket launcher has the ability to detonate fired rockets in midair. When firing a rocket hold down the fire button. When the button is released the rocket will detonate.

Grenade Launcher Specialist: This class is equipped with medium armor, a chaingun, and an upgraded grenade launcher. Grenades be detonated in the same manner that rockets are. When a grenade is detonated it creates a scatter of little explosions, which make it easier to hit a moving target.

Sentinel:
The sentinel is a defensive class, equipped with heavy armor, a rocket launcher, a chaigun, and a specialist grenade launcher. The sentinel is much slower than the other classes, but he has the ability to activate overdrive at any time.

Outrider:
The outrider is intended to capture flags. He has light armor, a chaingun, and a rocket launcher. The Outrider therefore has less health, but can travel at greater speeds. He also takes less damage while in overdrive mode.

The Platform

Fallen Empire: Legions is played in your web browser at http://www.instantaction.com/. The user simply downloads a plugin and then games can be run in the browser. It does not cause a drop in performance and allows for better system portability. There are a number of other games available on Instant Action, but Fallen Empire: Legions is by far the best.

Here is a short little video for those who have never played a game involving the use of jetpacks to travel at high speeds. I don't know why it cuts off, but for the most part it provides a good introduction.

Here is the full video, which I could not figure out how to embed.

You press escape to, and there is a little menu that you can scroll through under the scores. Select whichever class you want to play as, then either wait till you die or hit respawn.

Few questions. Does it take this long to download the game every time, or just the first time?

It says the game will run poorly because I don't meet requirements. I'm on a Macbook. Will I run into problems>

Why can't quakelive at least give me rudimentary support like these guys? What a bunch of assholes.

    Edit:
Integrated Intel® graphics are not supported

    Damn...

I played a bit of this. It's like they took a big long look at Tribes, decided that was too hard, stole some weapons and the jetpacks, and called it a day.

This looks promising. Tribes was fun for awhile and I'm always looking for then next fun CTF game to try out. The learning curve is always a bit of a pain in the you know what.

Yeah, and they called it a day after stealing the weapons and the jetpacks. I don't care if Jesus is the producer, Tribes minus 90% of the complexity doesn't turn into a better game.

I'm in the same boat as you.

Still, they claim that it's no where near completion, and that they plan to add more stuff (vehicles were mentioned somewhere).

I'm primarily a BASE and classic player (go figure). But no mods.. no Tribes.

Whilst I can understand that, it's kind of difficult for me to feel they stole stuff from Tribes when they were the dudes originally involved with it, and were intent on making a spiritual successor to it.

If I work at Boeing and then I go work for Lockheed Martin, and the first plane I build is a 747 ripoff only I forgot to put in windows or padded seats, what would you call it?

The Lockheed 748, now with improved airflow and a fitness center?

They're making a spiritual successor to Tribes and they don't have the license to call it Tribes. That's about the sum of it, how good the implementation is or isn't in itself doesn't make it that they're "ripping off" tribes.

It's like I'm not going to call out Chris Taylor on making Supreme Commander after having done Total Annihilation ten years previously. It was pretty much the objective to create a spiritual successor to TA.

While I agree that the game has been vastly simplified and that the complexity has been removed, thereby taking out some of the variety and challenge, the controls are much better than in Tribes. It is a lot smoother. If the developers follow their word, then more things will be added as this is a work in progress and I don't even think it is considered out of beta yet.
