This is a weird and lengthy problem that has me stumped. To save me some time, yes, I have up to date drivers, and have reinstalled them. Complete and up-to-date. For everything.
Anyway:
I have a Viewsonic VX2025wm (20.1", 1680 x 1050 resolution). For a while I was using a 24" Samsung (native resolution of 1920 x 1200).
I am running Windows XP, Service Pack 3. It is fully updated. I am also running Ubuntu 8.04. The problems are with both operating systems.
The problem is this: when I plug in my ViewSonic 20.1 inch monitor, Display Properties will not list the preferred resolutions. It will merely display the 24' monitor resolutions, including the 1920x1200 resolutions (and it runs this fine with the other monitor, this monitor doesn't support this resolution). And it will not recognize that monitor is a ViewSonic VX2025wm. I have installed the monitor driver, both from the CD, and the generic unsigned driver from the Viewsonic website.
In neither case did the list of supported resolutions change.
I sometimes unplug the monitor from my laptop to plug into my Ubuntu desktop. Both machines will not recognize the monitor, and in both cases, workarounds have failed.
In the Ubuntu case, trying to force the resolution ended in failure with normal method of modifying the xorg.conf. In the Windows case, trying to force the resolution using ScreenForce or other utilities always ended with failure as well.
So, my hypothesis is that the monitor has, for some reason, stopped broadcasting over the VGA cable its list of supported resolutions. I have no idea why this is, since it was working fine less than three (3) weeks ago.
Any ideas?
