Home Media Server (Also, PS3)

MeepZeroMeepZero Registered User regular
I'm looking to set up a separate box to serve as a media server for my apartment. Between me and my roommates I have 2 PS3s and a couple computers. What kinds of servers would you recommend?

I hear TVersity is pretty good, but I haven't heard of anything else offhand.

If you have an old computer lying around, you can just use that. Just put as much HDD space in as you need. You can do it running XP.

For PC to PC streaming you just need to have folder sharing turned on and have the videos in shared folders, I don't have a PS3 so I wont' speak to that, but I know it's not a hard process.

PS3 can't read media off file shares for some reason, you need a UPNP server. I'd highly recommend this one: http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/

Seconded, that's what I use and it does nearly everything flawlessly and it's still in development.

The only other program I've found that's simply serves files to the PS3 via UPnP is Nero Media Home 4, but it's not free.

After a few registry hacks Windows Media Connect will work with most files, it just doesn't do any type of transcodeing.

I also use Nero Media Home. Works like a charm for me.

Hey I have questions about this too..

I just set up a media server down stairs for my roommates. It is a emachine P4, 382mb sdram, 64mb mmx4000 video card, dvd player. Is there anyway to get this to play HD movies?

If it's possible, it wont' be a good experience.

Low bitrate 720p maybe, 1080p not a chance in hell.

No. It's probably got an AGP slot and no card with good hardware decoding is AGP. And that CPU won't even play 720p.

Profile -> Signature Settings -> Hide signatures always. Then you don't have to read this worthless text anymore.

Damnnit, where were you guys suggesting PS3 Media Server a few months ago, when I tried every aggravating piece of software I could find, but to no avail? Nothing would work properly or reliably. Then just last week I stumbled across that program, and it hasn't failed me yet. It's great; I highly suggest it to anyone.

The transcoding has worked quite well so far, too. I had a few HD trailers I tried watching, and my laptop transcoded them pretty flawlessly. The only stumbling block was while watching some 1080p stuff, but I think that had more to do with my crummy router than the program itself.

Wow PS3 Media Server is too good. Every file type I've tried has worked.

The best thing about PS3 Media server is that it doesn't have to maintain a library on your PC. It just browses the damn files.

When I installed PS3 Media server it was like the clouds opened up, the sun shone in rays upon me, and the angel choir sang major chords in slowly ascending patterns.
