Scam baiting as G***** W B***

edited February 2009 in Debate and/or Discourse
I figured there hasn't been a thread about scam baiting in a while, and I honestly find it fascinating. Not to the point where I'd do it myself and keep up with updates, but I like going to their sites and forums. It's essentially like the P-p-p-powerbook, except done on a constant basis.
Given their mission statement of an every drop in the ocean matters approach to actually preventing scams/delivering karma, one would wonder if it's a justification for wasting that much time on what is essentially obscure forum humor.

When I checked 419 Eater today, I saw that someone managed to convince a scammer he was Bush because the scammer had cc'd president@whitehouse.gov. He got him to stage performances ad self finance a studio recording project for a Nigerian version of YMCA, and got the guy to travel on his own expenses to another African country, thinking Air Force One would pick him and his friends up and set them up with US Passports and a musical career with "L***** V******"

http://www.the-numpties.info/the_village_people_numpty.html

While I wouldn't believe the scammer thought he was dealing with Bush, it seems pretty obvious he got this guy to jump through a lot of hoops and spend a lot of money (as well as taking cam whore pics)
Yet somehow I'm inclined to believe the scammers go along with the counterscamming for their own entertainment- using email for a living has to be boring and everyone finds stupid diversions on the internet.

Scam baiting is the practice of scamming and baiting those Nigerian 419 scammers that you get emails about all the time. Like, "You've inherited 200 trillion gabillion dollars from a non-existance family member, except I need you to give me money to release it, I swear you'll get the money." Or "I loves you, send me money so I can come see you and sex you up with my peni.. I mean vagina. Yeah my vagina." Sometimes you can get these guys to give you $20 in hopes they get $50 from you. Or a wooden statue of a penis, or something.

He wants to do it as GWB and see if he gets away with it.

Look up P-p-p-powerbook, you'll get a laugh. Also look up 419eater because it's a good read too.

    Which is, ironically, still illegal.

How does the logistics of a small-claims lawsuit play out between countries?

What if no money changes hands?

Regardless, you're all a bunch of dick-fuckers with no sense of humor. I imagine most of you running around your city going "JAYWALKER THAT'S ILLEGAL MOTHERFUCKER MWRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH".

Just because something's funny doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Hell, go for it if you like. The odds of being prosecuted over it seem pretty small, but that doesn't mean it's not a risk. Just have to ask yourself if it's a risk worth taking.

I stand by my assertion that many of the more vocal of you are similar to the MWRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH example I provided earlier. Except I'm sure you don't say anything out loud, just under your breath.

"MWRRAAAAAAAAARAGH THAT FUCKER JAYWALKED I WISH I COULD ARREST HIM MYSELF MOTHERFUCKER MWRAAAAAAAAAAAGH"

Supposedly this is illegal as it's fraud.(citation needed) Discuss the semantics of trying to have a small-claims issue across two countries that don't have a similar legal system.

It becomes less funny when you know that 419 scams are run by Nigerian mobsters with a healthy disrespect for the law(wow you dont say!!1!). There are people that have been killed by these guys for threating to ruin their scams. They also make no distinction between White and Black in this regard.

And what are these Scam-baiters doing? Ruining the scams of Nigerian Mobsters. Costing them money and pissing them off. Yeah, we are kill-joys for suggesting that this might not me a bright idea.

Good lordy, the ones who try to actually get shit from them are putting themselves at risk, yes.

People who waste their time with just email / camwhore them don't really put anything at risk.

Sometimes I wish I could find out who a person is who uses free email addresses. You're putting way too much stock into their abilities. I'd be hard pressed to put anything more downloaded the bat! and set up some scripts from friends.

I don't care about the legal technicality, morally it is at least questionable. The people who really get into scam baiting are every bit the sociopaths like those who dominate /b/, and what they are attempting to do to people, while admittedly often hilarious, is only hilarious in the same way it must be hilarious to the Nigerian when some dumb housewife cleans out her husband's savings in an attempt to get her million-dollar inheritance. Two wrongs don't make a right. Vigilantism and revenge generally aren't good things.

I'm pretty sure this falls under the same category as a 'help me fuck with this guy who fucked with me' thread in H/A, which'd get instalocked. Sure, stories of actually pulling it off are great to hear, but in general, it's just not not a good idea. It's one of those things that'd fit into the 'Bad Idea brand jeans' on SNL.

    Bad joss man, bad joss.

Actually, 'two wrongs don't make a right' sums it up much better.

The man in question was attempting to scam a church. And later attempted to scam someone who he thought had a daughter dying of cancer. I was disgusted by the scammer and eagerly anticipated his cumuppance.

This thread would be instalock'd if it was in H/A because it would then be asking for help in committing fraud. It's not going to get locked here if it remains a discussion on the practice and not solicitation on how to perform it.

    Mod hat off:

I think doing this is potentially risky, though not very, and I have a problem creating a moral equivalence between a guy trying to soak a naive housewife for her life savings, and a guy toying with such a scam artist and forcing him to waste some time and money. The committing fraud part is stupid and illegal, but I'm not sure it's necessarily immoral.

I wouldn't try to engage in it; as people have said it seems risky. If someone else wants to do it, well, they know the risks and I don't really feel bad for the victim. The vigilantism of it doesn't bother me as much as other acts of vigilantism might, since AFAIK (and my knowledge of it comes mostly from that This American Life story someone mentioned) there isn't really much that the law can do to touch Nigerian scammers. I might be wrong, but if they're immune to prosecution because of technicalities, I'm not going to get fussed over someone serving them their own medicine.

Most likely they probably paid someone to have them put it on themselves and then took a picture of it. They're notorious for that. They're also notorious of owning brothels full of women/paying prostitutes and taking pictures of them holding white cardboard so they can do bad photoshops of a "Hi there [shithead] I love you" sort of pictures.

the tone of some of the posts seem to suggest I'm considering trying it. I'm not, I thought I was pretty clear in pointing out how huge of a waste of time it is (if you go to the link you'll see the sheer number of long emails these guys type back and forth)

I'm glad someone's doing it because it's funny and I don't have sympathy for scammers. And these guys seem to be tolerated by law enforcement (and I believe have on occasion provided them with info? not sure about that though) so I'm not concerned for their safety.

I do have trouble believing they get the scammers to bite in the more outlandish baits, like the one I linked. I think the scammers play along because they're bored.
