Is upgrading the RAM on a laptop as simple as with a desktop?
I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 with two 256 MB PC2700 sticks. I'd like to take them out and put a single 1GB stick of PC2700 RAM. This should work, right?
It's not retarded like having to have two sticks or anything?
Also, would I be able to stick in one of the 256MB sticks for a really funky amount of RAM (Until I get a second 1GB stick, anyway)?
I just want to double check that it's that simple before I dump the money and get told I can't return for refund, only exchange (Which has happened before).
I upgraded the RAM on my old Inspiron 1100, and it made a huge difference. It's easy to do - there should be a fairly clearly-labelled panel on the bottom of the laptop, just unscrew it and the RAM slots are right there. On mine, only one slot was user-accessible, so I just stuck a 512MB SODIMM in there for a total of 768MB. For 1GB of PC2700, you should expect to pay about $120; 512MB can be had for $60 or so.
I wouldn't think you would have a problem with an irregular amount of RAM. I've been running Windows XP on this thing for a couple of years now, with 768MB for the past year and a bit, and it's been fine.

Sweet, thanks.
And yeah, I pulled the sticks out to check their labelling a couple days ago. I can access them both.
I want at least 1GB of ram and two 512s cost slightly more than 1 1GB, so I'm going that route so I can go to 2GB later.
I'm also thinking of upgrading the HD. Hmmmm......I need money. :P
