Woe, PS2 controller screwing up.

So I finally, finally got a used PS2 for my birthday, along with Okami and Shadow of the Colossus to play on it. Last night was game time; I played through the first bits of both games, no problems (except for the lingering guilt over stabbing a giant, relatively inoffensive minotaur-thing in the head).

However, today when I started playing Katamari Damacy, twice the game acted as if the controller had either the R1 or the L1 buttons pushed down, causing me to lost a ton of progress. The first time it happened, I had to restart the system and all was well for about an hour. The second time, I stopped playing in disgust (I couldn't save) and put in Shadow of the Colossus.

Cue problem part 2! The triangle button was not working at all, and L1 may or may not have been working. I tried resetting the system to no avail. I was not even touching the controller while the game was loading. Now I can't jump or get on my horse in the game, and google is quite unhelpful in figuring out why this happened.

Now, it is a used system, but the controller was working beautifully less than 24 hours ago. Can anyone help?

The last time I had similar problems, it was dust related. I got a can of air and blew out the controller ports and everything cleared up.

Also make sure the controller ports are clean and the controller isn't getting tugged out during play. Even a little bit will ruin the functionality. If that doesn't work, get a new controller. The things do wear out eventually.
