Could be heat problems. Open it up and blow out any dust that you see and make sure that all your fans are spinning.

Is it all games or just one particular game? Do flash games or 2D games cause it?

I just had the same problem - and fixed it.

Have you installed new parts into your computer recently? It could be that your PSU isn't putting out enough power to support your new parts.

It could also be a heating issue. The cheapest way to deal with this is to blow out all the dust from your computer. You can pick up a can of compressed air at nearly any electronics store. Use the compressed air to blow all of the dust out of your machine.

Does it give you a blue screen before hand? I had the issue once before. It's more than likely heat related as people have said... But if you're getting a blue screen (which may show for just a second) then it might be related to many number of things.

I had a problem like this recently, because my computer was overheating.

It wouldn't hurt to go into your BIOS on startup and just let your computer sit for ten minutes or half an hour and see how hot it gets. If you're getting into 70C, you're getting way too hot.

To fix mine, we changed the thermal paste on the cpu, because mine was peeling off, though that is not necessarily your problem (like others said, it could just be too much dust).

I'm more inclined to it being a hardware failure, most probably the PSU, since they start losing effectiveness over time, their output goes lower and lower.

ok provided it is a PSU issue would it occur less frequently if i played these games at lower settings?

when this was happening to me it was a conflict in the BIOS with the video card.

I had to update my bios to get it to stop shutting down whenever it felt moody.

Yours sounds like a heat issue first. clean out that gunk and pull the box away from the walls!

I had a problem similar to this recently and it turned out to be a failing PSU.

Does it do it when you're just sitting at the desktop, not just playing games? If so, make sure you don't have the AntiVirus2009 (or whatever it's called) virus/trojan.
