When I try to turn off my laptop these days it just logs me out and goes to the profile screen (and no I'm not just pushing the wrong button). What worries me more however is recently its started restarting the computer it'll shut down then come right back on again without me touching anything. The last few times its done this I just took out the battery to turn it off.

Am I being paranoid or could there be a virus at work here?

Vista can have some hibernation and shutdown issues. Most likely, it's a hibernate problem. Check out this link:
    http://computerperformance.co.uk/vista/vista_hibernate.htm

Or you can head to Microsoft's website and download the hotfixes (12 of them) for hibernate issues.

There should be settings for what your power button does in the control panel - you can switch its functions.
I'm running vista so I can't take a look for myself, but it should be under power settings or something of that sort. Have a look to see what it's set to.
