Barack and Michelle Obama. Its hard to add detail with felt pen, in such a small area. it bleeds too much.

so theres two types of water color sets in Painter. The digital set which is a glazing set of tools you can apply on the same layer as your drawing, and a simulated traditional set which simulates the actual diffusion properties of real water color paints and must be used on its own layer...in other words, its a real pain in the fucking ass for someone whose art experience consists of entirely photoshop. Anyways, I think I got the hang of it, and decided to use it for line work instead of using a tradition pen tool. I wanted to get a more organic feel to my lines. This is what I have so far...thoughts?

edit: fixed the pointy head, added more balance to the stance

2 hours sketching, 1 trying out rough colouring in photoshop.
I messed up the right side of her mouth and/or her chin on the same side, but it was only a sketch to try out photoshop colouring on so I didn't go back and try to fix them.

Now that the horrible quarter is over, I need to start drawing again.

Why does everything I do end up looking masculine. It's not like I don't look at women.

I guess maybe I should draw using some references huh.

    Also image macros yes.

So! Speedpainting contest went more or less the way I thought it would--no fame or fortune for me, but it was a good experience. It was also a lesson in what things it would have been incredibly useful to have gotten before doing a painting contest, like palette I don't have to hold, and some rags (I meant to bring some, but it slipped my mind as I left my apartment), and a jar of mineral spirits to clean my brushes. And so on and so on. Anyway, here's the five-hour "speedpaint":

    speedpainting.jpg

EDIT: Any crits would be welcome, of course, though I suppose more in a "for next time" than applied to this particular painting, since I don't intend to buy a bus ticket to Andújar just to finish the thing.

It's very nice Crawdad, though your tower looks a little preacrious.

Are you going to finish it? I think it's got potential to be quite good.

Thanks! This particular painting I don't think I'll be coming back to, partly because it'd be too much of a hassle dragging the painting on an hour-long bus ride to the site (especially since it's a 45ish-cm panel) every time. It does make me want to do more open-air painting around the region, though, and kind of got me over my aversion/fear of drawing cities and buildings (out of apprehension of my perspective skills, which are still off on this painting).

I know what you mean about the tower; it definitely leans to the left a bit in places; I guess it comes from getting caught up in the details without making sure the basic form is set first (damn my impatience). It's even more apparent in the rest of the building, where I didn't do the sighting and angles I did with the tower; the roof and gable, for instance, need to be way more angled upwards. I also get angry every time I see the right end of the building, because I didn't have time to block in the side of the building, and it makes the whole thing look odd. I also wish I had gotten more of the surrounding area, and that I had some way of cleaning my brushes so that the burnt sienna didn't permeate every part of the painting (I tried to cool the sky down with ultramarine, with varying degrees of success). I also got advice from another one of the painters to tighten up the front right cylindrical sculpture thing on the tower, which I'm not sure I did enough.

Speaking of brush-cleaning, I should get to that...I had no supplies with me, so I just wrapped my brushes in a disposable palette sheet and put them in a plastic bag until I could clean them later. Which would be now (I treat my art supplies horribly D:).

EDIT: I suppose I could always include the shot I took to show what I was looking at (which I probably should have used to tip me off about the angle of the roof before I got too far into it.

    spreference.jpg

And the numerous discrepancies reveal themselves...

EDIT EDIT: Hey, look, I fixed it!!

    fixsp.jpg
I know, that doesn't really make it fixed...

White on black looks awesome, nice work DR.

I remember once seeing an article/video online of some guy at the top of a large building drawing the view -- basically, every building he could see, 360-degrees around him. It was pretty amazing and I wanted to link that but alas, my slightly dull story is all I could find. Sorry dude.

Thanks pals. Sounds like something I'd enjoy doing if I had some friends to talk to and a supply of beer Grenn. :D Let's do it if we meet up one day. They're both for a show I'm doing in a few weeks. I'm not entirely happy with them. The shows theme is 'draw' so it was pencils/paper only, and I'm used to being able to do fine detail with pens. It was difficult.

    Live and learn eh.
